Kia Sorento diesel engine. There is still gunpowder... Review of Kia Sorento I. Main malfunctions of the KIA Sorento diesel engine

Kia Sorento I appeared in 2002 and at one time was more popular than the Tuareg and Pajero. And although the very first cars are already 17 years old, they still stand out in traffic and look no worse than their prestigious peers - the BMW X5 I and Lexus RX 300 II. We like to greet people based on their clothes! And although the first Sorento is criticized for its oak suspension and poor handling, it performs amazingly off-road. What else attracts the Korean jeep and is it worth buying, we’ll look into this article.

Which motor to choose

Most Sorentos are sold with a 2.5-liter diesel engine. Before restyling, the engine developed 140 horsepower, and after - 170. “Konyi” added a control unit and a turbine with rotating blades.

Such a motor is a good weapon for a jeep, but it can’t boast of reliability. Some owners experienced loss of power and increased oil consumption due to breakdown of the sealing rings. Connecting rods break off less often and the turbine fails.

Fans of gasoline units have a choice: 2.4 engines with 139 liters. With. and 3.5 for 195 liters. With. The first one works only with “mechanics”, and cannot be called fast. The second is the most dynamic, but also the most voracious. Per “hundred” the 3.5 unit consumes 15-17 liters of fuel.

Where will Sorento take place?

The Sorento's ground clearance of 205 mm is sufficient for most country roads. But the suspension is missing. It breaks through on potholes and bumps, and begins to “overwhelm” in turns. But on a country road with all-wheel drive engaged, the car shows itself in all its glory.

There are two all-wheel drive systems - EST and TOD. The first is that Part-time is connected if necessary and allows you to save on fuel. The second is that Full-Time operates with all-wheel drive all the time. EST is good for the city, while TOD is good for rough dirt roads.

What's special about the salon

The interior design leaves many questions. It is especially unclear on what principle the colors were selected. The dark gray top of the center panel and the beige lower part of the cabin do not match the tacky brown inserts in the center console and on the door armrests. For complete trash, the only thing missing is the blue and pink shades of the ceiling.

However, there are no comrades according to taste and color. Perhaps you like this design solution. Share your opinion in the comments after the article.

There are versions with a gray interior, without wood-look inserts. Inside, I wouldn’t say it’s elegant, but everything that’s average and necessary for comfort is there.

Depending on the configuration, you can find in the Sorento:

  • Cruise control;
  • electric mirror drive and heating;
  • electrically adjustable driver's seat height;
  • heated front seats;
  • single-zone climate control;
  • leather interior.

The steering wheel, although decorated with aluminum-look inserts, looks boring and simple. In versions with a multimedia steering wheel, these inserts contain music control buttons.

The driver and his neighbor are not offended by the place. Those sitting behind them were less fortunate. There is not enough distance from the backs of the front seats to the knees of passengers, and this despite the large dimensions of the body - 4567 mm in length and 1863 mm in width.

Three lamps are responsible for lighting! Not only the front and central parts of the cabin are illuminated, but also the trunk.

The luggage compartment is shallow for an SUV. Its volume is 897 liters. Things and suitcases longer than 90 cm are not included here. They will have to be folded across the trunk.

What problems can a Jeep have?

Among the problems of the Korean SUV are weak paintwork and lack of anti-corrosion treatment. The entire body is subject to rust, but most of all - the sills, the frame in the rear arches, the arches themselves, and the rear fenders.

A diesel engine takes a long time to warm up in winter. When it’s -20 outside, it takes 15 to 25 minutes to warm up the interior of a moving car.

The Common Rail fuel system is sensitive to diesel quality. Already at 170 thousand mileage, the high pressure fuel pump may require replacement. It costs about 40 thousand rubles excluding labor.

Fuel injectors last even less - 100-150 thousand km. New ones cost 16,000 rubles apiece, and there are four of them in the engine.

Keep in mind that if a car is being sold at a deep discount, its fuel system may be dying. If everything is in order with it, the car will not cause any trouble from MOT to MOT.

How much does it cost and with what problems is it sold?

In the secondary market, Sorento is often sold with diesel units. We found such a car for 430 thousand rubles:

The model with the most “gluttonous” 3.5 petrol engine is sold at the same price as a 2.5-liter diesel engine:

We found a post-accident copy made in 2003 with a mileage of 240 thousand km:

Is it worth taking the Kia Sorento I?

The first generation Kia Sorento is a car that is definitely worth taking. It is unique and unlike anyone else, and off-road driving gives an incomparable delight. Due to intermittent problems with the common rail fuel system, the SUV is more suitable for tech-savvy drivers.

Do not forget that in terms of off-road performance, subsequent generations of Sorento are significantly inferior to their older brother. Over the years, what fans of the model feared happened: the frame SUV turned into an urban crossover. Without “honest” all-wheel drive, low gear, but with a classic Haldex clutch for crossovers. It's a pity…

KIA Sorento is valued for its unpretentiousness, reliable power units and durable suspension. The Korean crossover has been produced since 2002, during which time three generations of the model have been produced. Until 2010, Sorento for the Russian market was assembled at IzhAvto, then in Kazakhstan and at Avtotor in Kaliningrad.

Sorento engines

The first generation of the car was equipped with a 2.5-liter D4CB diesel engine, as well as gasoline G4JS, G6CU, G6DB. The volume of the G4JS gasoline engine is 2.4 liters and the power is 139 hp. With. G6CU - 3.5-liter unit with 195 hp. With. It was replaced in 2006 by a 3.3 liter G6DB petrol engine producing 247 hp. With.

The second generation of the model, which was produced since 2009, was equipped with a 2.4-liter G4KE gasoline engine and a 2.2-liter D4HB diesel engine. Their power is 197 and 175 horsepower, respectively.

The third generation appeared in 2014. This is a KIA Sorento Prime. A D4HB diesel engine with a power of about 200 hp is available for the crossover. s., as well as G4KE with 188 hp. With. The line was supplemented by a 3.3-liter G6DB petrol unit producing 250 hp. With.

Sorento engine failures

Kia Sorento gasoline engines are durable and rarely cause problems for car owners. Although each of them has characteristic weaknesses and certain features. All gasoline engines, starting with and ending with the G6DB, are conventional aspirated engines that consume from 12 liters per 100 km in the city.

The pioneer G4JS on the Sorento 2.4 “digests” even domestic A-92 gasoline. It is prone to overheating in the winter season, which is due to improper functioning of the thermostat. The dynamics of the crossover with a 2.4-liter gasoline engine are mediocre. And with serious mileage, over 200 thousand km, oil consumption begins. Among the features worth noting is the complex shaft drive, which includes balanced counterweights and requires competent maintenance.

More powerful versions of the G6CU and G6DB are equipped with a CVVT system and individual ignition coils, which can be operated without problems in Russian conditions, despite the low quality of gasoline. These engines are power hungry. The 3.5 liter G6CU has a more outdated design and has proven itself well on older Pajero. G6DB runs, depending on the quality of service and loads, from 300 thousand km. Then there is increased oil consumption, speed fluctuations, and increased noise. Sometimes Sorento owners with a G6DB engine complain about floating faults. For example, from time to time the Check Engine error comes on and the idle speed increases. The problem lies in a faulty throttle valve assembly.

But not all Sorento engines are worthy of praise. Thus, the 2.5 CRDi D4CB engine, which was installed on the pre-restyling versions of the first generation, is capricious in operation. With a mileage of over 160 thousand km, cold starting may become more difficult, interruptions in operation begin, and the fuel system presents unpleasant surprises. The injectors become clogged with metallic impurities, and scuff marks appear in the fuel injection pump. These problems have been partially resolved on cars manufactured after 2006. Thanks to restyling, the engine power increased to 170 hp. With. Engineers have provided a new design of nozzles and turbines. This entailed not only positive, but also negative consequences. There was a problem with the injectors, or more precisely, with their fasteners, which can break off after a mileage of over 100 thousand km.

In 2009, the KIA Sorento began installing the G4KE with a power of 175 hp. With. This is an analogue of the two-liter G4KD gasoline unit, the service life of which exceeds 250 thousand km. Among the typical disadvantages is increased noise; some car owners are faced with wear of the liners, which can turn, leading to the crankshaft jamming. This usually only happens during very intensive use. After all, erosion of the surface material of the liner occurs.

The diesel KIA Sorento with the D4HB engine is very playful when compared with its predecessor, which was equipped with a 2.5 CRDi engine. Adherents of dynamic driving may encounter oil burns. But this is an exception rather than an established practice.

What additives will be useful for KIA Sorento engines and fuel systems?

The in-line four-cylinder diesel engine D4CB with a turbine and direct injection system holds 8.5 liters of oil. And the D4HB engine of the new KIA contains 6.7 liters of oil. Owners of Sorento diesel crossovers with these engines can be given the following recommendations:

  • Reduce maintenance intervals from 15 thousand km to 7.5–10 thousand km. Timely maintenance will save engine life.
  • Since the internal combustion engine is turbocharged, after driving at high speeds on the highway, do not immediately turn it off. Let the engine run for a while. This will extend the life of the turbine.
  • To treat the 2.5 CRDi diesel engine marked D4CB, use additives and. Do a double treatment, each time pouring 8 liters of additive into the engine. You can read more about this here.
  • To treat a modern 2.2-liter D4HB diesel engine, use an oil additive. After driving 400–500 km, repeat the procedure.

The repair and restoration additive will build up a dense layer of metal-ceramic on the working surfaces of the engine and extend the service life of the turbocharger. Double treatment gives the following results: reduced oil and fuel consumption, increased compression, simplified starting at sub-zero temperatures. But keep in mind that the performance characteristics of the engine also depend on the serviceability of the fuel system and the quality of the diesel fuel used.

The weak point in the KIA Sorento 2.5 CRDi is the copper sealing rings of the injectors. If they are not changed in a timely manner, injector repairs will be required. They become clogged with soot due to the use of low-quality fuels and lubricants. This is a typical problem for most diesel cars that are operated in Russian conditions. Therefore, it is worth taking a responsible approach to choosing a gas station, and adding an additive to diesel fuel to increase the cetane index. This will reduce the load on the injectors and prevent vanadium corrosion.

The maintenance schedule for gasoline Kia Sorento with engines G4JS, G6CU, G6DB, G4KE should also include preventive treatment with the RVS Master additive, which is simply added to the engine oil. This will fully preserve the performance characteristics of the engine, strengthen friction units, and reduce the amount of noise and vibration.

KIA Sorento transmissions

The first generation of KIA Sorento was equipped with a five-speed manual transmission, as well as a four- and five-speed automatic transmission. For the second generation of the crossover, a six-speed manual transmission and automatic transmission were developed. The third generation of KIA Prime is equipped only with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions are available.

The four-speed automatic that was used on the first generation Sorento is the A44DE, manufactured by the Japanese company Aisin. The components that fail during serious mileage in the A44DE include the overrunning clutch, oil pump, and valve body. Later, instead of the outdated one, they began to use a more modern five-speed automatic transmission A5SR1 from Jatco.

Signs of automatic transmission breakdowns on a KIA Sorento can be considered shocks, kicks, vibrations, crunching when switching, howling and hum of the transmission. But the appearance of noise or knocking does not mean that serious repairs, replacement of the same valve body or oil pump will be required. This will become clear only after a comprehensive diagnosis and troubleshooting.

If you want to extend the life of an automatic or manual gearbox, use the RVS Master additive. The KIA Sorento is suitable for processing automatic transmissions. The additive is added directly to the oil and serves as the basis for restoring worn gears, bearings and other friction surfaces with a dense metal-ceramic layer.

But for the mechanics of the Sorento you will need or. The same compounds are used as an additive in the axle and transfer case, which have characteristic weak points. For example, due to wear of the oil seal, moisture penetrates into the junction of the transfer case and the gearbox, which provokes corrosion and failure of the main pair of the transfer case and the differential housing in the transmission. This is a design flaw that a transfer case and axle additive cannot solve. But on the other hand, it can restore worn friction surfaces, achieve easier and smoother operation of the transfer case, and eliminate the howling and hum of the bridge.

Kia Sorento is a mid-size crossover, named after the resort town of the same name in southern Italy. The car was put into mass production in 2002. Since then, three generations of the model have been developed, which have equally gained popularity on domestic roads. The second generation has been produced since 2009. It is noteworthy that the basis of the Sorento’s main competitor, the Hyundai Santa Fe, was chosen as the crossover platform. Three years later, the model has not undergone significant changes during the planned restyling. And already in 2014, Kia announced the start of production of the third generation of crossover.

If the first generation was subject to minor criticism: stiff suspension, uncomfortable controls, high cost for unimpressive configurations. The second generation of the Kia Sorento, on the contrary, received a lot of praise. The buyer was provided with a wide range of power units, with various crossover configurations available to choose from. At the same time, the car is adapted to Russian operating conditions, which is an important help in choosing a quality vehicle. But, besides this, it is important to take into account the resource of power plants. In this article we will tell you in detail what the service life of the Kia Sorento engine is.

What engines are equipped with the Kia Sorento?

The first generation of the crossover was equipped primarily with a 3.5-liter G6CU DOHC power unit producing 192 horsepower. The engine was coupled to a five-speed manual transmission or automatic transmission. In 2006, the manufacturer carried out a serious upgrade of the model, adding several unique assemblies to the line of power plants. This is how the 2.5-liter D4CB turbodiesel engine became available for purchase. With the advent of the second generation of the Kia Sorento model, a new G4KE assembly appeared in the engine line - an engine with a displacement of 2.4 liters, characterized by a power of 170 hp. It was this installation that subsequently became the basic and most popular among all available modifications.

G4KE is distinguished by the following technical parameters:

  • 16 valves;
  • 4 cylinders;
  • injection power system;
  • Engine life is more than 250 thousand km.

The Kia Sorento EX configuration with a 2.2-liter engine is still very popular today. In general, the 2.2-liter engine is loved by many domestic drivers for its unpretentiousness and low fuel consumption. Initially, the unit had a power of 190 horsepower, but in 2013, during the modernization of a number of installations, its power was increased to 197 horsepower. At the same time, a diesel analogue appears.

Actual motor life

Gasoline naturally aspirated power units of the Kia Sorento are distinguished by the presence of a chain drive gas distribution mechanism and a water cooling system. Some modifications, for example, the 2.4-liter G4KE engine does not have, so it requires valve adjustment every 90-100 thousand kilometers. The G4KE engine is, in fact, an enlarged copy of the G4KD, as it includes a crankshaft with a piston stroke of 97 mm, which is 11 mm longer than that of the younger versions of the unit. The timing chain itself is quite reliable; it runs 100-120 thousand km without problems before replacement. The cylinder head of almost all engines is made of aluminum, which gives stability and endurance to the engines.

The only significant problem with G4KE, G4KD, G4KJ is cranking of the crankshaft liners at 100 thousand km. Only the connecting rod bearings are subject to rotation, but there were no complaints about the main bearings among the owners of the crossover. However, the problem is rather isolated. Of the total number of car owners with similar engines, only 1% noted the problem. In general, it can be noted that the reliability of all Kia Sorento gasoline engines is quite high. With proper care, they can travel 300 thousand kilometers.

But Russia has always had a specific attitude towards diesel. They are picky about the quality of the fuel they fill, and also require increased attention during maintenance. At the same time, Kia Sorento diesel units are characterized by a constantly heard tapping sound of the camshaft during operation. Diesel modifications are difficult to repair; the main difficulties are related to the accuracy of setting the gaps. However, their actual resource is also quite large - 280 thousand kilometers. True, not every owner succeeds in reaching this milestone.

Owner reviews

The first symptom of a malfunction of a turbodiesel modification, as a rule, is a whistle that comes from the engine compartment while the engine is running. Repairing a turbine is not a cheap pleasure, so it is important to diagnose all related breakdowns in a timely manner. It is recommended to replace the chain after 100,000 km, or, in extreme cases, after 115,000 km. It is not advisable to delay replacing the timing chain, since there are known cases when it broke after 120 thousand kilometers traveled. Reviews from crossover owners will help you determine exactly what the service life of the Kia Sorento engine is.

Engine 2.2

  1. Vasily, Ryazan. I have a car with a 2.2 turbodiesel engine; I purchased the crossover after restyling. The car has already covered 120 thousand kilometers. Just recently I replaced the timing chain and that's it. There were no more problems or breakdowns. The cylinder head is reliable, high-quality manufactured. At the service station they said that she was only afraid of overheating. If the needle goes into the red zone, then the probability of needing cylinder head repair is almost 100%. It is important to use only high-quality motor oil. This is the only way to keep the internal components of the cylinder head in perfect condition for as long as possible.
  2. Stanislav, Cheboksary. I've been driving a Kia Sorento since 2013. Currently the mileage is 100,000 km. What is important to consider and observe? Of course, the quality of diesel fuel. I recommend refueling exclusively at proven gas stations. I myself prefer Lukoil, Rosneft, Bashneft, and there are also a considerable number of good fuel suppliers. Injectors suffer greatly from poor-quality “power”; the average fuel injection pump resource is about 200,000 km. Regarding the installation share. But the manufacturer himself assures that they run 150,000 km without problems. That is, this is a warranty resource, we add another 100 - 150,000 km on top and get the maximum possible.
  3. Igor, Moscow. I bought a car with a 2.2 CRDi engine with a power of 190 horsepower back in 2009. Today the odometer shows 190 thousand kilometers. The engine is cool, economical and moderately torquey, but, in my opinion, too noisy. Sometimes it feels like you are driving a tractor. Maybe I'm wrong. But, at one time I drove many diesel cars, but I don’t remember that the engines were so noisy. The timing chain needed to be replaced after 100 thousand kilometers. It is better not to delay replacing it, as it may break and require serious repairs. It also takes a long time to warm up. In winter this is a necessary measure. It is highly undesirable to go out on the road without warming up. I think that this engine is capable of going 250-300 thousand.

The 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine ideally copes with the difficulties of operation on domestic roads. Its resource in some cases reaches 300,000 km. The main thing is to monitor the condition of the engine oil, air and fuel filters, and also not to neglect the scheduled replacement of consumables.

Engine 2.4

  1. Egor, Voronezh. In 2008 I purchased a Kia Sorento with a 2.4 liter engine. It has already covered 200 thousand km. In my opinion, the most successful engine is the G4KE. This power unit copes with difficult operating conditions in Russia without any problems. It is important to monitor the condition of the filters and timely replace consumables. I use original Hyundai/Kia engine oil. There were no breakdowns. I replaced the timing chain only once - it covered 120 thousand kilometers, it is undesirable to use it longer, it can seriously stretch and break.
  2. Vyacheslav, Moscow. I have a 2012 Kia Sorento, second generation. I took the car secondhand, now the odometer shows 180 thousand, I don’t know whether it was tampered with or not, but it seems to me that the mileage is quite real. The motor runs like a clock. I have no complaints about the build quality. The oil does not “eat”, although many say that after a mileage of 200,000 or more kilometers, regular additions of lubricant begin. I don't know if this is actually true. So far everything is fine. I think that 250-300 thousand km is a very realistic resource for the G4KE engine. By the way, this is an almost exact copy of the 4B12, which is what they are equipped with, so there is no doubt about its reliability and quality.
  3. Alexey, Yalta. Personally, I didn't like the car. More precisely, the engine itself is 2.4 liters. Up to 170 thousand kilometers everything was normal, but after that the car literally fell to pieces. I changed the chain, injectors, crankshaft, oil cooler and other components. I had to spend a lot of time, effort and money. Perhaps I got the wrong package. Even during the first 100k, the liners began to turn. At that moment I realized that I could not avoid problems with the car in the future. In general, I repaired it and then sold the car.

Kia Sorento with a 2.4 liter engine can be purchased without any worries. In extremely rare cases, problems with turning the liners and early failure of the injectors are possible. But, in most cases, these problems are the consequences of poor quality service and neglect of maintenance rules. The G4KE engine with proper care lasts about 300 thousand km.

Engine 2.5

  1. Evgeniy, Rostov. I will not open America if I say that the life of the Kia Sorento engine depends to a large extent on the quality of service. The 2.5 liter D4CB engine is very complex in design. It's not that easy to repair. I myself have been using the Kia Sorento since 2002. Among the shortcomings of the engine, I note that it has a complex timing system of three chains with hydraulic tensioners. The chain does not last long under our operating conditions - 90 thousand, maximum 100 thousand. Very loud engine, the new 2.2-liter turbodiesel is much quieter. It is best to change antifreeze every 30 thousand, engine oil after 7-8 thousand miles. The car has already driven 220 thousand, there has not been a major overhaul yet, the valves immediately bend and the timing chain breaks, so keep an eye on its service life.
  2. Matvey, Yekaterinburg. The service life of the 2.5-liter engine is about 250 thousand - then a major overhaul. This is almost identical to the Japanese 4D56 from Mitsubishi. The Koreans added their own turbocharging, changed the fuel injection system, and also modernized the cylinder head and piston group. I will say that the engine actually failed to add resources. It is difficult to repair; many craftsmen say that it cannot be capitalized. That is, you will still have to find a good specialist. The timing chain is weak and can break and bend the valves. I used Sorento myself from 2012 to 2015, after which I sold it.
  3. Alexander, Vorkuta. Diesel is just like diesel, nothing special. It runs loudly, when you start it cold, it seems like the camshaft is knocking. It turns out that this is a feature of the operation of this engine. You can’t drive out without warming up, one plus is that it really “eats” little fuel. Weaknesses - copper rings are quickly destroyed, liners also do not last long, the cylinder head does not like overheating. Overall, the engine is not perfect, but is quite acceptable for everyday use. The average resource is 250 thousand kilometers.

Like any other motor, the D4CB has its advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage of the engine is the need for a small amount of fuel. It is quite reliable, but in rare cases it exceeds its service life. On average, it lasts for 250 thousand kilometers.

Engine 3.5

  1. Kirill, Novokuznetsk. Many people probably know about this engine. It was successfully installed on the Mitsubishi Pajero. I have had the car since 2017, bought it on the secondary market, it was made in 2004 (first generation). The mileage is already 240 thousand, no one has twisted it. Excellent characteristics, the motor has a lot of advantages, but there are also disadvantages. After driving 200,000 km, I constantly add oil - about 0.5 liters per 1,000 km. The chain installed is not the most reliable - 100,000 km is the limit of its resource. At the service station, experts say that 300,000 km is the maximum resource. Then the speed starts to fluctuate, in general, you will need to disassemble the engine and look at the condition of the cylinder block.
  2. Daniil, Moscow. What I like about G6DB is that it doesn’t have any bells and whistles, it’s simple and thoroughly researched. Weaknesses and disadvantages: there are no hydraulic compensators, the clearances are adjusted manually, it is noisy when “cold”, it is demanding on the quality of the engine oil. I have a Kia Sorento 3.5 l as standard. The mileage is 210 thousand, I recently started adding oil. Before this, everything was fine with lubricant consumption. In general, the engine does not cause major problems; there were no critical breakdowns.
  3. Egor, St. Petersburg. I have a Kia Sorento with a 3.5 engine, exactly the same as the 6G74. I looked under the cover, there are Mitsubishi and Bosh marks on the sensors everywhere. Its main difference is that the block is made not of aluminum, but of cast iron. The engine takes a very long time to cool down, which is convenient in winter; it doesn’t lose heat in 2 hours in the cold. I've already driven the crossover for 250 thousand kilometers. There were problems only with the crankshaft sensor, I changed the high-voltage wires and spark plugs. There is also a need to change the belt, as well as the chain, with a roller every 120 thousand. There are no problems with adding oil, I’m surprised, although many say that this engine is characterized by “oil loss”.

Depending on the load and quality of service, the 3.5-liter Kia Sorento engine is capable of traveling from 250 to 300 thousand kilometers. The undoubted advantage of the motor is its design simplicity. It is easy to maintain and repair.

KIA Sorento cars were supplied to the Russian market from the main factories of the Korean concern. In August 2005, assembly of this SUV was launched at the IzhAvto automobile plant. Four years later, production of the KIA Sorento in Russia was discontinued due to lack of funds to purchase car kits. In May-September 2011, the IzhAvto plant assembled 800 cars in order to fulfill its obligations to the KIA Motors concern.

In the KIA Sorento models of the first version, three types of power units were installed:

The restyling of the model in 2006 made it possible to increase the power of the diesel engine to 170 l/s. The range of power units was replenished with a 3.3 liter petrol engine with a power of 247 l/s.

Main malfunctions of the KIA Sorento diesel engine

Practice has shown that the most problematic thing in a KIA Sorento is the diesel engine. The components of the fuel supply system quickly become unusable, causing difficulties in starting the unit and interruptions in its operation. In the fuel injection pump, friction of parts is observed, which causes scuffing. Metal particles pass along the fuel rail into the tank and injectors.

The main factor in the premature occurrence of fuel system malfunctions and engine malfunctions is low-quality “dry” diesel fuel, which does not contain sufficient lubricants.

In the KIA Sorento diesel, problems may arise when it is necessary to replace the spark plugs. With a mileage exceeding a hundred thousand km, they “stick”. When unscrewing, the housing may break off.

Owners of an SUV, after driving over 150,000 km, often have to deal with the fact that the engine stalls while driving or becomes capricious when starting. Overflow injectors create these problems. They need to be repaired or replaced. The cost of new elements ranges from 8-11 thousand rubles. You will have to pay about 7 thousand rubles to overhaul the injectors. Since the difference in amounts is negligible, it is worth investing in new items as they will last much longer.

Breakdowns in diesel engines of restyled models

The restyled models with a more powerful diesel unit were not without problems. There have been cases where, when working with a load at maximum speed, the piston connecting rod broke off. As a result, engine elements were broken during rotation. The power unit has to be changed. Such breakdowns cannot be called common, but still, the risk of this malfunction of the KIA Sorento diesel exists and appears after a mileage of over 20,000 km.

Often, owners of cars that have traveled more than 70,000 km are faced with such a problem as the “firing” of the valve due to a broken bolt. Most often, failure occurs on the 4th element. The manufacturer admits the defect; in order to eliminate it, the bolts were replaced with more durable options.

There are no particular complaints about the turbine. Under normal operating conditions of the car, it flawlessly performs its functions up to 170 thousand. After hundreds of thousands of kilometers, symptoms of malfunctions may appear. The first “bell” is a whistle, radial play increases, and oil appears in the air duct. Repairing a KIA in this case will cost 15,000 rubles. The turbine can be replaced. It costs approximately 30,000 rubles. The service will charge 6-7 thousand rubles for installation.

The engine is equipped with a timing chain drive. According to the recommendation of experts, it needs to be replaced after hundreds of thousands of km have been traveled. Otherwise, the chain stretches, begins to rattle, and by 150,000 it acquires unacceptable dimensions. There were cases of drive failures after 120 thousand. Chain replacement work costs between 8-10 thousand rubles.

The service life of the fuel pump is designed for 220,000 km. With a mileage of 140-180 thousand km, instability of its idle operation may be observed, associated with problems in the pressure reducing valve.

Problems with KIA Sorento gasoline engines

Atmospheric power units are more stable. These motors are equipped with belt drives, which must be changed after traveling sixty thousand km.

The main problems with KS gasoline 2.4 are related to overheating in the winter months. The following picture is observed:

  • the engine warms up to 100°C;
  • the pipe in the cooling system does not heat up;
  • The fan runs to cool the motor.

The cause of the problem is a malfunction of the thermostat. The manufacturer was unable to fix this problem. Some owners have attempted to replace the thermostat with analogues from other models, but this does not bring results. Another problem with this engine is a significant increase in oil consumption after hundreds of thousands of mileage.

During operation, weak points were also identified in the 3.5 liter unit. The bolt securing the crankshaft drive pulley is destroyed. If the pulley breaks, it is advisable to replace it, otherwise the breakdown will soon appear again. This element costs about 5 thousand rubles.

Often, owners of these models are faced with unstable engine operation due to air leaks into the intake manifold. In cars with mileage exceeding 100,000, there were breaks in the valve that penetrated the cylinder. This KIA Sorento malfunction can be repaired by a service center for 30 thousand rubles. The concern carried out a campaign to eliminate this deficiency in 2005.

The owners had no serious complaints about the 3.3 engine.

Maintenance of KIA Sorento

Extending the life of the car and eliminating many of the problems that arise with the Kia Sorento can be achieved by careful attention to the technical equipment and timely replacement of elements for which a certain service life is provided. Owners should know the lifespan of some important components and parts:

  1. Drive tension roller - 130 thousand km.
  2. Water cooling system pump - 110 thousand km.
  3. Catalyst - 120 thousand km.
  4. Steering rack - 150 thousand km.
  5. Generator - 170 thousand km.
  6. Fuel level sensor - 150 thousand km.

Maintenance of a KIA, like any other car, primarily includes preventative work on the brake system. This is a guarantee of the safety of the driver and passengers. After a mileage of 40,000 km, the KIA pads on the front discs need to be replaced. The rear elements last longer and can be replaced after one hundred thousand mileage. At the same time, the vacuum pump may become unusable. It is necessary to check the integrity of the hoses on which hernia formations occur, creating a risk of rupture.

Periodically it is necessary to inject the splines of the transfer case and driveshaft, and the shaft crosspieces. The cycle for replacing oil seals is 110 thousand km. Many malfunctions of the KIA Sorento all-wheel drive are associated with wear.

These SUVs feature durable, reliable suspension. In order to keep it in excellent condition, after ninety thousand kilometers you need to replace the bushings and stabilizer struts, after 120,000 you will have to replace the ball joints, and after another twenty thousand it will be time to install new silent blocks and shock absorbers.

Overall, owners and experts believe that the quality and cost of this SUV are in an ideal balance. Many typical KIA Sorento breakdowns can be prevented and eliminated without exorbitant costs.
