The manufacturer has worked to improve the sound insulation of the car, the interior has been completely updated, which now has a MyLink multimedia complex with an 8-inch touch screen. Its new Duramax turbo-diesel is made in Taiwan, the powertrain is assembled in Mexico, there's a lot of Brazilian in the basic design, Chevrolet - French name, the car itself was assembled in Missouri, and you will have to pay at least another $3,730 if you want to buy the diesel rather than the gasoline version of this compact truck. And if you like real trucks, you definitely want one.

The Colorado and its near-twin, the GMC Canyon, were introduced last year, bringing some life to the seemingly dormant midsize (or compact, or whatever) car segment. This is not a re-release of the average car that General Motors once pushed into this segment.

No, the Colorado's natural manners and smart design will appeal to those who just a year ago would have reflexively bought a big truck. It seems even GM itself was surprised at how the new Colorado turned out and how it sold.

Unexpected turn

With GM's Wentzville, Mo., assembly plant already running on all cylinders, a Duramax diesel version isn't expected to further boost production or sales. However, it effectively enhances the Colorado's capabilities in a somewhat unexpected way.

The large, long-stroke, 16-valve 2.8-liter Duramax DOHC engine makes just 181 horsepower. horsepower, but produces as much as 500 Nm of maximum torque at 2000 rpm. That's a full 135 pound-feet more than the gasoline V-6-equipped Colorado. And it's not too far off from the 520 pound-feet claimed for the Silverado's 5.3-liter V-8, which needs to rev to 4,100 rpm to deliver peak torque.

All Duramax versions will be equipped with the same 6-speed automatic transmission found on other models. Plenty of torque means the Colorado Duramax is the best compact truck available for hauling and towing.

The most powerful petrol model can tow about 3175 kg, and the 2x4 allows you to tow three and a half tons. A diesel 4x4 will pull 100kg less, but an 8.5m Airstream Land Yacht trailer, for example, weighs 2987kg as a base, leaving the Colorado Duramax owner at least half a tonne for options, water and cargo like bedding.

Without such impressive torque at low speeds, gasoline models are not at all as convenient for use with heavy loads.

Diesel balancing

High torque is the main advantage of the Duramax engine, but balancing it also makes life easier in many ways. The engine is mounted around a tall metal block and has two counter-rotating counterweights in the oil pan that absorb most of the vibrations from this growling monster.

Add hydraulic engine mounts and enjoy the very modest - although there is still some - oscillation at idle that was once common in diesel trucks. To keep everything completely smooth, a centrifugal pendulum vibration damper is installed in the transmission torque converter.

According to the manufacturer, “the vibration damper is an absorbent damper with a set of additional spring balancers that – when engaged – eliminates torsional vibrations of the engine.” Okay, let's wait for the SAE report.

Finally, to keep engine noise from penetrating the cabin, GM soundproofed the instrument panel and increased the thickness of other gaskets. The result is a very quiet diesel engine when listening from the cab with the windows up.

Driving an empty Colorado Duramax 4x4 along California's central coast, the first impression you'll get is how quiet and balanced it is. The engine rarely revs above 2,000 rpm, and the transmission operates as smoothly as a gasoline engine.


If the driver rarely looks at the tachometer and is not fixated on the pace of acceleration, then it will be difficult for him to distinguish this Colorado from the gasoline one. According to Chevrolet, the Duramax engine adds about 500 pounds to the Colorado's curb weight compared to the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine. That's 300 pounds more than the V-6.

Since most of the extra weight is concentrated at the front, it only results in slightly more steering effort. Of course, the diesel is not as fast as its V-6 brother, but in most cases it is quite fast enough. There's no EPA fuel economy figures yet, but GM promises 7.8 mpg on the highway for the diesel Colorado.

When GM's 1,800-pound horse trailer was hitched to the car, the car began to make noise. The engine itself is not very loud, but the characteristic sound of ignition from compression is clearly distinguishable. This sound is not annoying. In fact, some owners will be satisfied to think that this is exactly what a diesel should sound like. However, this noise undoubtedly exists.

There's also an exhaust brake retarder, also known as a Jake Brake, which uses exhaust pressure to regulate downhill speed in addition to the disc brakes mounted on each wheel.

The Colorado Duramax is comfortable enough for everyday driving, will fit in almost any garage, and is quite attractively priced compared to other diesel trucks (though Ram offers its full-size 1500 with an EcoDiesel V-6 engine for $32,000).

But there has never been a vehicle in this class so well suited for cargo handling. The main drawback is that the diesel is only available on the short cab model and on the long bed Crew Cab LT and Z71 models; The extended cab version is available only in petrol version. Still, it seems that the number of cars Chevrolet can sell will be limited only by its production capacity.
