Ural State University them. A. M. Gorky (USU) is a university of the classical type, one of the most famous universities in Russia, operating in Yekaterinburg (Sverdlovsk) in -, -2011. On May 12, 2011, USU became a part of the Ural Federal University and ceased to exist as an independent legal entity.

Ural State University A.M. Gorky was established in the city of Yekaterinburg by the decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR dated October 19, 1920.
Initially, it included institutes: mountain, polytechnic, medical, agricultural, pedagogical, social sciences, and working faculty... In the subsequent years of its development, the university underwent significant structural changes. In reality, it was not institutes, but faculties that operated. The main reasons were a lack of faculty and funding. Because of this, a number of institutes did not actually start their studies (for example, social sciences), and a number of faculties were merged into one (for example, metallurgy, mechanical and chemical were merged into the chemical and metallurgical faculty). By 1924, only 3 faculties remained within USU (in the 1920s, the abbreviation USU or Uraluniversity was usually used) - mining, chemical-metallurgical and medical. By August 1, 1924, the Faculty of Medicine was transferred to Perm, and the Ural University, which consisted of the remaining 2 faculties, was renamed into the Ural Polytechnic Institute (later USTU-UPI), in which the forestry faculty will also be organized in 1925.
In 2010 more than 15 thousand students studied at USU, including more than 8 thousand full-time students.

The educational process was provided by 95 departments. Research work was carried out, in addition to departments, in two research institutes: the Institute of Physics and Applied Mathematics and the Institute of Russian Language and Culture. The research part of the university included astronomical observatory, a botanical garden, a biological station, about twenty branch and university-academic laboratories. There were three museums: the history of the university, a book museum with a collection of rare and ancient publications, a museum of scientific achievements. The university had its own publishing and printing center. The structure of the university included a scientific library, the total library fund of which was about 1,200,000 books and magazines. Scientific library was equipped with workstations for computer communication with the libraries of the world. The department of promotion of employment of graduates worked.

The university is famous for its numerous permanent research expeditions. Among them are the Ural-Siberian, Crimean, Novgorod archaeological expeditions, the Ural archaeographic expedition, ecological-physiological, geobotanical, toponymic, folklore expeditions.
At the time of the decision to join UrFU, there were about 140 professors, doctors of sciences, 18 members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, over 30 honored workers of science and culture, about 500 associate professors, candidates of sciences among the university teachers.

History department
Freshman day: a holiday dedicated to those who have just entered the Faculty of History. Celebrated in September, for the last five years it has been held at the Samotsvety camp site, on the lake. Tavatui... Includes: master classes - presentation of specialties and departments of the faculty, a football tournament between teachers and freshmen, initiation into students, a concert-competition of first-year groups.
5th year student day: analogue of school last call... Held on the last Friday of December preceding the week of credit. Consists of the "last lecture", the selection of the permanent student of the graduating course, a concert and a banquet.
Spring Science School: held in April-May. Held for three days at one of the tourist centers of the Sverdlovsk region. The best students of the Faculty of History of USU, selected by competition, get the opportunity to participate in master classes conducted by the best historians of the country. Guests spring school there were B. Mironov, I. Danilevsky, A. Davidson, A. Nazarenko, E. Guskova and many other domestic experts.
Historian Day: held in April-May in one of the theaters in Yekaterinburg. Includes a concert organized by all creative teams of the faculty. It is a traditional meeting place for graduates of the faculty of all years.
Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics
- Day of Mathematics and Mechanics: the holiday of spring, which is celebrated by mathematicians and mechanics of matmeh USU on the last weekend of April. The following events are timed to this holiday:
- Olympiad DMM... Held in the penultimate week of April. Traditionally consisting of many difficult and not very difficult tasks, the DMM Olympiad allows students to both show their knowledge and receive an addition to the scholarship in the form of cash prizes and gifts from sponsors.
- Mess... Held on the last Saturday of April. Students have at their complete disposal all the auditoriums of the faculty in order to conduct competitions and theatrical performances in them.
- Concert... Held on the last Sunday in April. A sparkling action in one of the houses of culture, organized by the efforts of teachers and students.
- Open championship of mat-fur in mini-football ... Conducted from 2004 year... The main difference from the official inter-faculty championship of Ural State University, held in the spring, is that teams made up of representatives of different faculties, graduates, employees of Ural State University can take part in this tournament, one "legionnaire" is allowed. WITH 2007 year competitions are held between women's teams.
