How to easily learn English. The best methods for learning English. Evaluate your learning outcome

Knowledge of foreign languages is considered by many to be an incredible talent and almost a gift from the gods. But every polyglot knows that it’s more about hard work and personal interest than about natural abilities, much less a miracle. Anyone can do this if they choose the right training method. Tips on how to study English language for beginners, we will share today.

In the material we will consider all the nuances of the educational process: from the motivational part to lesson plans and transition to the next level. With us you will be 100% able to learn English from scratch on your own!

In any business, the main thing is to take the first step. That is, it is not easy, for example, to spontaneously take 10 minutes and play learning English words on a smartphone or practice grammar for half an hour. It's about about purposefully starting to study English, that is, conducting regular classes, doing exercises, repeating the material covered, and so on. And here the problem arises: how to force yourself to do it?

The solution is simple - become sincerely interested in the English language. Setting goals will help develop interest in activities. Think about why you want to learn English. A variety of things can act as motivation, for example:

  • Go on a trip;
  • Make acquaintances with foreigners;
  • Move to another country;
  • Read books in the original;
  • Watch movies without translation.

And even the most banal thing is a burning shame that everyone around you understands English at least a little, but you don’t yet. This state of affairs needs to be corrected, right? So let this be your goal!

The main point when defining a goal is to understand that it is 100% important and necessary for you.

And as an additional motivator, before taking English lessons for beginners, set yourself the desired reward for achieving a successful result. For example, every 5 lessons completed give you the right to an extraordinary trip to your favorite restaurant or the purchase of some nice little thing.

The main thing is that the reward should not be missing the next lesson, because... Under no circumstances should the regularity of the process be disrupted. As a last resort, it is possible to reschedule a lesson on a free day, but not completely cancel it.

Goal and rewards are effective mental tricks that are very important to use specifically for initial stage studying of English language. Thanks to them, after just a few lessons, a program will be formed in your subconscious that learning English is very useful and profitable. Well, in the future, when you begin to understand the linguistic culture and features of the language, on the basis of these partly selfish motives, a natural interest in further study will develop.

At what level should I start learning English?

Before you start learning English, you need to determine your level of knowledge.

It’s one thing if you have never encountered this language and have only now decided to choose a course to independently study the basics of English at home. In this case, you completely learn English from scratch: starting with pronunciation of sounds, memorizing the alphabet, learning numbers, and so on. To master these skills, the Beginner level training program is used.

The situation is completely different if you have already covered some material in school lessons, university classes, or studied spoken English on your own. Then you are probably familiar with such basics of speech as:

  • Sounds, letters and numbers;
  • Personal pronouns;
  • Uses of the verb tobe;
  • Constructions This is/There are.

If this is indeed the case, then you have already moved from the beginner class to the second level of knowledge - Elementary (basic). With this level, you can learn English for beginners not from the very beginning, but from more complex topics, for example. Present Simple, degrees of comparison of adjectives, practice exercises on verb tenses, etc. But, if you are not confident in the quality of your knowledge, then it would be a good idea to repeat English from scratch.

How long does it take to master a basic English course?

We all learn English or another language in different ways. Some memorize vocabulary in 5 minutes, others quickly grasp the basics of grammar, and others have perfect pronunciation. Accordingly, for each student, some lessons are easy, while others are difficult and require more time.

The duration of the training course is also influenced by the chosen methodology. Classes with a teacher in a group usually last 3 months. Individual lessons can reduce this figure to two or even one month: this result is achieved through daily and long lessons. For self-learning, the time frame is completely blurred.

Thus, the time spent on learning English varies from person to person. On average, this period ranges from 3 to 6 months. You can speak specifically only if you know the curriculum and the student’s abilities. Our method, for example, offers beginners to master English from 0 on their own in about 4 months. Let's talk in more detail about this tutorial.

English for beginners - lesson plan for the entire course

This section presents the curriculum for the English language course for beginners. This is a step-by-step schedule with lesson topics in English for Beginner and Elementary students. The course lasts 4 months and ends with a transition to the next level of knowledge. If you plan to study the language on your own, then the material provided will be an excellent help in organizing classes.

General rules

Before we begin to study the plan, I would like to dwell on the important points of the educational process. To obtain a positive result, you must follow the following rules.

  1. Always speak English out loud . This point is important not only as working out the correct pronunciation, but also as a psychological factor. Be sure to pronounce all letters, words and sentences out loud, and then you will “get used” to speaking English. Otherwise, there is a risk of never speaking English at all. But why teach him then?
  2. Don’t skip “uncomfortable” topics. Yes, it happens that the material does not “go” at all, but this does not mean that you should abandon it. Nor does it mean that you need to understand it for 3 years until you become a “pro.” If you feel that the topic is difficult, then try to grasp at least its essence. The use of “inconvenient” construction in speech can be minimized, but you must know what it is about and why.
  3. Be sure to repeat what you have learned. Repetition is included in the plan and is just as important as learning new material. Only through timely repetition is information retained in memory for a long time.
  4. Keep your own grammar notebook. In the age of the Internet, many people prefer to learn the rules directly from the screen. But writing it out in your own hand is necessary, because this way the information passes through you and is better absorbed and remembered.
  5. Do exercises in writing. Again, the more you write, the more familiar you become with a “foreign” language: you remember the spelling of words, the order in a sentence, and the construction of grammatical structures. In addition, writing helps you focus more on completing the task and avoid making unnecessary mistakes.

4. Repetition of learned vocabulary

IN Lately To enhance your career growth or to continue your studies abroad, learning English on your own has become popular. Of course, for many the question arises - where to find a good English tutorial, audio lessons and other materials that will effectively help you master foreign language for a certain period of time. It is worth saying that learning English on your own is a long process, but everything is in your hands and you can make this process exciting and enjoyable.
So, you decided not to hire a tutor, not to pay money for courses or book tutorials, but to choose to learn English for free on your own using online lessons. It is worth saying that at first, most people fail to achieve any positive result and, naturally, they simply give up.

Stereotypes are what hinder English learning

These are the components that most people who decide to undergo self-study English course at home and advance at least a little in your knowledge:

  • the majority are confident that learning any foreign language on your own is a very difficult task;
  • many people learn a language but do not achieve the expected results;
  • most people reach a certain level of knowledge, say advanced, but it takes them years to learn;
  • many people think that they are simply not capable of learning a second language;

All of the above can be transformed into one single whole and conclude that learning English from scratch is a long and thorny path. However, there are also quick learning courses, that is, you can master English in just two months. Just give up traditional learning methods that are based on textbooks, cramming dictionaries, basic grammar, as well as boring and monotonous dialogues.
We are all familiar with this approach to learning a foreign language from school – if you are not going to read Shakespeare in the original, why “gnaw” on the grammar stone. User reviews indicate that the method of paid services remains school-based, only the learning process occurs in an accelerated mode, that is, you study English not two hours a week, but seven hours a day.

Correct methods are the key to success

Do you want to start learning English online? Leave books and lessons for later. First you need to decide on important aspects your teaching method. That is, you must become your own teacher. The main thing is to put grammar aside in Kamchatka; you won’t need it if you just want to communicate with native speakers, listen to radio and television programs, of course, if you are not going to take an international exam to obtain a certificate. But this is not the main thing - no matter what method you use when mastering the language learning course at home, what is important is your positive mood during classes, and then positive result won't keep you waiting long.
So, 3 main principles self-learning English from scratch:

  • motivation – you must really want to learn a foreign language;
  • the right method – try several teaching methods and choose the best one for yourself;
  • learning process - decide why you need knowledge of English - for everyday communication or for subsequent studies at prestigious foreign universities.

And most importantly, don’t “stand” in one place – constantly develop and improve your knowledge. Use the lessons posted on our website for this, because they are offered to you completely free of charge!

There are plenty of ways to learn English in 5 minutes, in a day, a week or even a month on the Internet, but you should immediately learn one rule: to get something, you need to give something.

In our case, to learn English to a certain level, you will need to devote your time and effort. This applies not only to English, but also to other languages - you need to learn every day and the sooner you want to progress, the more time per day you need to devote.

English levels

Let us specify the meaning of the word “learn” a language. There are 6 levels of language proficiency:

A1(Beginner, Elementary). Basic level, knowledge of several common phrases and words.

A2 (Pre-Intermediate). Slightly higher than basic. You can tell about yourself in a few sentences (having previously written and learned the text), read simple (very simple) texts, and understand individual phrases and words by ear.

B1 (Intermediate). Intermediate level, you can read children's literature in English, talk about simple everyday topics, correspond on social media. networks.

B2 (Upper-Intermediate). Above average level. You can talk on various topics with native speakers, read various literature in English, and express your thoughts more or less well without preparation.

C1 (Advanced). Advanced level. Here you can already thoroughly load the average American with oral speech, you understand their mentality, you know how to express your thoughts well, convince, and make appropriate jokes.

C2 (Proficiency). The coolest level. Proficiency at the Native Speaker level. If you understand any spoken or written language, you can defend your doctoral dissertation. As a rule, you know English even better than your native language.

In addition to your time, you can also spend your money, in some cases even quite a lot. Most The best way learn any language - go to a country where this language is used and live there for at least six months in complete isolation from native language. That's the whole point, you want to maximize the time spent with the target language and minimize the time spent with your native language. Read, write, speak and think in the target language. It's not easy, but it's fun :)

You should not treat learning English as a job or as a homework, or another thing that other people or circumstances force you to do. You must want to learn English yourself.

For money, you can go to another country, enroll in courses or hire a tutor - this will speed up your progress. But the point remains the same: you still have to study at home yourself. Without this, no tutors or courses will help you much. No one will learn English for you. Tutors and courses will only point you in the right direction. From this it turns out that if you really want to, you can learn English on your own and without significant financial investments.

5 ways to learn English

I’ll tell you about the methods that I use myself and that really help in learning English.

Method No. 1: Watch films in original (English) dubbing with subtitles. Write down all unfamiliar words and phrases in a separate notebook and repeat them constantly. This way you will learn new words every day, listen to “live” speech, remember the structure of sentences, understand slang and just have a good time. This method when daily training very soon it can become your pleasant habit. This is the most effective way to learn English and it was the one that helped me get to Upper-Intermediate. I wrote in more detail about this method.

Method number 2: Read books in English. Better something from modern literature, since if you take old books or the same classics, they will accumulate a lot of “dead” words that are now not used either in writing or in communication. Choose contemporary fiction bestsellers or something interesting to you. For example, programmers can read books about programming.

Method #3: Listen to audiobooks and podcasts. Podcasts are educational videos or audio recordings. There are also podcasts-speeches that you can both listen to and watch; podcasts from TED or BBC. This way, you can not only learn English, but also develop intellectually and even professionally. Two in one.

Method number 4: Programs and applications. There are special applications on Android or iOS that are designed for learning English. Very popular among them Duolingo And LinguaLeo. Among the more serious programs it is worth highlighting Rosetta Stone(paid).

Method #5: Chat via Skype with Native Speakers. Here the emphasis should be placed not on pressing the keyboard of a laptop or computer, but on a live conversation using a webcam and microphone with Native Speaker. There are special social media for people who want to learn another language. There you can find Native Speakers of many languages, chat with them, and exchange Skypes. During regular communication with Native Speaker, you learn to speak correctly, understand spoken language, construct sentences, etc. Such communication on an ongoing basis can be a very good alternative to traveling to another country. And it's completely free. More details about social. I wrote about networks for learning English.

I specifically left communication with Native Speakers for last, since I would not recommend it for beginners. On basic level fluency in the language, you will not be able to communicate normally and learn in communication; a live conversation may end in just 2 minutes due to a lack of your vocabulary, basic understanding of the language and simply mooing during these 2 minutes.

Start with the first method. After learning the words, listening and watching modern English-American speech, you will be able to connect applications ( method number 4). Then you can watch/listen to podcasts and read books. And only then is it worth looking for an interlocutor among Native Speakers.

Live, informative communication is at the highest level of language proficiency, and in order to participate in a dialogue, you already need to know the language at least above the elementary level, and better yet, above the average level. Try it, experiment.

Test

Here is another cool site where you can test your English vocabulary -

This article is dedicated to those who want to learn English on their own. Without any help at all. Let's assume that you don't have money for a tutor or courses. All you have is desire, time and access to the Internet. You have already started learning the language - at school, university, maybe even on your own. But somehow everything didn’t go well.

The instructions are specifically for those who already know a little English. Article for beginners.

So, you probably have the following difficulties:

Problems with motivation. More than once you have started to learn a language, but never completed it.

By the way, what do you mean by the end? Perhaps you don’t even have a clear goal other than “I want to learn English.” And if there is no goal, then there will be no result. I'm telling you this for sure.

You don't have a program of action. You don’t understand at all: what to tackle first, and what to tackle later. And how best to do it.

Even if you periodically study English, you train only passive skills - read, passively listen to audio (and you can listen actively). Speaking and writing are not involved at all, although they can also be improved independently.

You don't know where to get information. Some grammatical topics are difficult to understand on your own, and a clear human explanation has yet to be found. There is also no place to check speech and writing for errors (in fact, there is).

We decided to help you. This is how we will structure our instructions: let’s go from the first problem to the last. This article will not contain “thank you tips” like “start learning grammar and words, listen to podcasts in English.” Each piece of advice will be very practical, with a detailed algorithm and a useful link.

1. Set a goal

You started learning English, but gave up. Why? There may be different reasons. For example, you don’t really need this. I taught because everyone else taught. In this case, there is no need to try to force yourself again. It's better to spend your time on something really important.

But let’s proceed from the idea that you still need English. Then why did you quit? Most likely, you set your goal incorrectly. Perhaps it was vague, not specific, something like “I want to learn English.” You couldn’t achieve such an incomprehensible goal, you couldn’t see your progress, so you gave up. “This is a waste of time, fuck it,” you thought. How to set a goal correctly so as not to lose track?

First you need to answer the question: why do you need language in life? Where do you plan to use it? Based on this, you can understand what level of English is required. For example, for communication while traveling it is quite enough Intermediate level. It turns out that we set ourselves the goal of reaching this level.

First step: Decide what you need English for in life. Depending on this, understand what level of English proficiency you plan to achieve. This is your long term goal.

2. Determine the current state of affairs

Now you need to find out where you are now. What level of language do you have, what you can do and what you can’t. To do this, you need to pass a language level test, and also examine each individual skill: reading, speaking, writing, listening. All the tools for this are available at the link: .

Second step: determine what level you are now. Which skills are weak: listening, speaking, grammar? Or all together?

3. Calculate the time

Let's assume that you have an Elementary level. You need English to communicate when traveling. This means that a confident Intermediate is enough. Now you know the final goal and the point where you are now.

It seems that the route is clear, but this movement can take years if a clear deadline is not set. But how to calculate it? How do you know how long this route takes? Here we will add into the equation the average time it takes to reach each level.

On average, it takes ≈ 400 hours to reach the Intermediate level. But this time is from scratch. We have an Elementary level. This means we can subtract ≈ 100 hours (the amount required to reach Elementary). This means you will need approximately 300 hours of continuous study.

Now you need to decide for yourself how much time a day you are willing to devote to English. If it’s an hour, then you will reach Intermediate in approximately 10 months. Then you can set the deadline to October 2018, if you start studying (as you probably promised) in the new year.

Third step: look at the image below and calculate how long it will take for the level you need. Then decide how much time a day you are willing to spend on English classes. According to the formula number of hours ÷ per number of time per day = number of days. The end result is your deadline.

4. Building an action program

What to do now? How to get to the coveted Intermediate? For your benefit, the British Council, together with Eaquals, has described everything that a holder of each level needs to know. And we . Take it and learn!

Explanations for the table:

First, look at the column with your own Elementary level and see if you know everything. If not, then it's worth filling in the gaps. Then you can safely move on to the next column and learn words, grammar, etc. from there.

Don't forget about your weak sides. For example, if tests show that you have problems with listening, then you should intensively improve it with exercises. Algorithms for each skill will be below.

Fourth step: study the table of levels and see if you already know all the topics required for your level. If not, fix it. And then go to the next level.

5. Learning short-term planning

Now these “knowledge gaps” need to be formalized into specific mini-goals and planned for clear periods of time.

Every week you should set yourself these small goals:

  • learn to build sentences in,
  • learn,
  • read the first one.

And then at the end of each week you will be a winner. Oh, how this will affect motivation! Otherwise, with the distant goal of “reaching Intermediate,” you won’t have any motivation.

We have already written about such short-term planning in the article: About the same problem in the video:

Fifth step: Turn each topic from the table into a clear short-term goal. Determine a specific time period for it (for example, a week). This way you will see your progress. This is the most important thing in order not to give up in the end.

6. Don't get stuck in theory

Another one important thing, which you need to understand: any new information, be it a grammatical rule or a pack of new words, you must pump up from four sides. These are speaking, writing, listening and reading. Proficiency in English looks like this:

Vocabulary and grammar are included in each of these skills.

So, if you have learned 10 new words, then you know how to use them in speech and writing (active skills) and recognize them in someone else’s speech or text (passive skills).

If you have learned how sentences are constructed in , then you know how to say and write a sentence in this tense and understand the meaning of these constructions in someone else’s speech or text.

All four skills (including speaking and writing) can and should be developed independently. We have written algorithms for each. In addition to the exercises, the articles contain links to all the materials you will need for training:

Sixth step: I would say that this is not even a step, but general provisions about how to learn a foreign language correctly. Take the time to study our articles on each skill. From them you will learn which words are worth learning and how to do it effectively. How to learn grammar rules correctly so that you don’t just solve tests, but speak. What independent exercises can you do to improve your language skills?

7. Where can I get information?

One of the reasons why you gave up learning English at one time was because it was difficult for you. A different language means a different way of thinking. Just try to figure out the grammar alone, especially if you study on your own. The tutor might be able to give a clear explanation: compare it with the Russian language, come up with a cool analogy. And when you do everything yourself, grammatical difficulties overwhelm you, and look for articles on topics that are incomprehensible. If you personally need an explanation on some topic, but we haven’t done it yet, “order” in the comments. We will improve!

Let's sum it up

So, your memo is ready:

1. At the very beginning of your journey, clearly formulate why you are learning English. This determines what level you must reach. This is a long term goal.

2. Now determine the current state of affairs: take a level test and tests for individual skills.

4. Now, using our table, you can build your own training program: fill in the gaps, learn the words and grammatical topics that are named in the table.

5. The main thing is that you also formulate these “gaps”, words and topics for yourself into clear goals with a strict deadline. These will be your short term goals.

6. Improve each new vocabulary and grammar from four sides: listening, reading, speaking, writing.

And remember: The main thing is to take responsibility for learning. Nobody will teach you English. More details in the video:

Good luck!

I hope you will now reach your (clearly stated!) goal. We, the Lingualeo team, will support you in every possible way.

In our telegram channel we want to conduct an experiment: how difficult it is to learn English on your own, based on our instructions. Wait in January. Be sure to subscribe to our channel. And next year will definitely be productive for your English!

Reading time: 12 minutes

A A

For some, the English language (and sometimes not only English) comes so easily, as if the person grew up in an English-speaking environment. But most people, unfortunately, have to work hard to master at least its basics. Is it possible to learn a language quickly and without teachers?

Can! And 50% of success is your sincere desire.

Rules for effectively learning English from scratch at home - how to master the language faster?

A new language is not only an expansion of our consciousness and horizons, it is also a huge benefit in life. Moreover, English, as you know, is considered international.

So, where to start learning, and how to master a language without outside help?

  • Let's decide on a goal. Why do you need a 2nd language? To pass an international exam, to communicate with residents of another state, to get a job new job in another country or just “for yourself”? Based on your intentions, it’s worth choosing a methodology.
  • Let's start with the basics! It is impossible to learn a language without knowing the basics. First of all, the alphabet and grammar, as well as reading rules. A regular tutorial will help you with this.
  • After obtaining stable initial knowledge, you can move on to choosing the option of contact learning. For example, lessons on Skype, an option for remote courses, or a school with the opportunity distance learning. Having an interlocutor is the key to success.
  • After choosing a course of study, be sure to pay attention to fiction. It is recommended to use adapted texts at first, and later, when you gain experience, you can switch to full-fledged books. It is important to master (qualitatively) the technique of speed reading. Read detective stories and novels. Let the books not be literary masterpieces, the main thing is that your vocabulary expands. Don’t forget to write down and be sure to memorize vocabulary you don’t know.
  • Access films, various programs and famous series in the language of your choice. At first it will be difficult to understand anything, but over time your hearing will get used to foreign speech, and you will even begin to understand it. You can devote 30 minutes a day to such educational viewing, or you can even watch only foreign TV programs.
  • Speak your chosen language constantly : at home, commenting on your actions; communicating with friends and family members, etc. Let family members support you in your endeavor - this will make the process go faster. Constant practice is extremely important.
  • Study the language closely at least three times a week for 1-2 hours. Or every day for 30-60 minutes. Reinforce your studies with practice - your efforts should not be in vain.
  • Constantly work on your speaking skills. You need to read simple articles (any), listen to news in the language, write short texts, and train your English speaking skills.

Organization of learning English at home - program

To be honest, English is the simplest language on earth that exists. Therefore, do not set yourself a “wall” in advance with the attitude “it’s difficult, I can’t handle it.”

The installation must be correct - “it’s easy, I can do it quickly.”

Where to begin?

Getting ready for the first stage of training

Let's stock up...

  • Books and video courses with the basics of the language.
  • Films in English/language without translation into Russian.
  • Fiction and educational magazines.

It will also not be superfluous:

  • Specific resources for learning language through communication. For example, foreign comrades, chats, etc.

Basics – what can’t you do without?

The first month and a half is the period during which you must master the basics of the language.

Do you think it's not enough? Nothing like this! A month and a half is even “with a reserve!”

The “basics” include...

  • Alphabet.
  • Constructing sentences of any type.
  • Obtaining a minimum (initial) vocabulary (from 300).
  • All necessary grammatical forms.
  • Correct reading and pronunciation.

Now you can move on to the exercises

For training, which will take about 3 months, you can use popular thematic services, ideal for expanding your vocabulary.

The plan for studying on such resources is simple - every day you spend at least 1 hour on the following exercises:

  • Add 5 new words to your dictionary.
  • We take a short text on the topic of the words you have chosen and translate it. We add 5 new words from this text, again, to our dictionary.
  • We find a commercial or a song to suit our taste and also translate it.
  • We complete the entire block of exercises (in accordance with the selected service) to remember words from the dictionary.

Every week should bring you 70-100 new words. That is, after 3 months you will already be able to boast of an increase in your vocabulary by more than a thousand words, while acquiring quick translation skills almost on the go.

The natural environment is one of the main criteria for success

The more often you hear foreign speech, the easier it will be for you to learn the language.

That's why…

  • We communicate with native speakers.
  • We discuss ordinary everyday topics in English.
  • We read foreign press, books, leaf through magazines.
  • We watch films without translation.

Perfect option- go abroad. Not for a visit, not for a month or two, but for a year or two, so that the effect of learning the language is maximum.

Without giving up reading, we take up the pen and write on our own

Describe anything - events, news, your actions.

It is ideal if you start your own business using not Russian, but exclusively English.

It is important to learn not only to write correctly, but also to express thoughts correctly.

Complex shapes are the next stage

After 8-9 months of hard training, you will read and write in English without difficulty. You can also easily translate texts.

From this point on, it makes sense to move on to more complex forms that have not previously been used. For example, “Need have” or “I wish I knew”.

Practice, practice, practice – always and everywhere

By the way, it’s not so difficult to find a foreigner to practice in our domestic social networks. Many foreigners strive to get closer to Russian speech and register on our sites: you can help each other.

After a year, your knowledge will reach a sufficient level to continue mastering the language somewhere in rainy London, completely immersing yourself in the culture of native speakers.

  • Learn the language in the 1st person. Memorizing phrases from phrase books automatically models specific situations in your mind: by trying each phrase on yourself, you avoid the impersonality of memorized texts, which will subsequently help you get used to the text and remember it more effectively. For each topic in the phrasebook – 2-3 days. Learn consistently, being sure to memorize all the accompanying words.
  • According to experts, perfect formula learning is 30 words daily. Moreover, 5 of them must certainly be verbs. It is recommended to take words starting with a new letter of the alphabet every day. After you have "run" the entire alphabet "in a circle", you can start again with "A". The effectiveness of the method lies in the creation of a good tradition (rule), which gradually becomes a habit and is further transformed into a system.
