This popular midsize crossover is now in its third generation of redesign. The new Toyota Highlander 2019 will be produced in 2019-2021. The manufacturer again plans to seat seven or eight passengers across three rows, making it, the Honda Pilot and Subaru Ascent the only SUVs that can carry up to eight passengers (the Chevrolet Traverse can also seat eight, although it isn't exactly the size of a full-size crossover).

Modern SUV

Most recently redesigned for the 2014 model year, the Highlander is one of the oldest vehicles in the class. It fills a niche between Toyota's midsize 4Runner and its full-size Sequoia sibling—both are body-on-frame SUVs. Today's Highlander isn't as spacious as the Traverse, nor is it as big as the Sequoia. The 2019 Toyota Highlander in a new body is not a new model, but the photo shows that some innovations will still be introduced, and the price for brand followers is not such a significant factor.

It balances well on the road and boasts exceptional refinement, plenty of standard gauges and Toyota's reputation for reliability and safety. Until early 2018, the Highlander was the best-selling eight-passenger midsize crossover in the world. It's second only to the Ford Explorer among three-row vehicles in its segment.

Why is it worth waiting for a new product from Toyota?

Apart from new exterior colors, Toyota is unlikely to significantly update the car's exterior. Highlander was last updated in 2017. Then the designers changed the styling, and the engineers installed a new V-6 engine, an upgraded transmission and added many standard features safety features, including autonomous emergency braking as standard on every trim level. New elements were used in the interior and the seat design was changed. These changes remain relevant in a segment in which almost every rival shows something new.

As for the production timeline for the next Highlander, it is important to note that crossovers from Toyota typically have a six-year life cycle. The fourth-generation Highlander is expected to be introduced in 2019 as a 2020 model. However, some industry sources are reporting that the 2021 model will be pushed back to 2020 to give engineers time to adapt it to the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). This platform is already used on the Prius hybrid sedan and Camry midsize sedan. It will also underpin the redesigned 2019 Avalon full-size sedan and RAV4 compact crossover.

The 2019 Highlander will likely be priced higher than competing models.

Interior

The 2019 Highlander's cabin hasn't been updated since 2017, and that's not a criticism. Premium materials, an increased number of airbags, a touch screen as standard - all these are already familiar indicators for a car in this series. The LE will get a 6.1-inch center screen, while all other models will get an 8-inch display.

Toyota is in the process of integrating Apple CarPlay compatibility, but it's unclear whether the Highlander will get it before the upcoming redesign. Instead of CarPlay (or Google Android Auto), Toyota prefers its proprietary Entune system, which users may find a little awkward to use. For example, on models not equipped with built-in navigation, you must use the Toyota smartphone app to display GPS maps in the center display. Some of the capacitive buttons that surround the screen are located far away from the driver. Moreover, the display is installed at such an angle that it instantly glares when hit sunlight.

Exterior

The SE is the most aggressive of the range, with unique 19-inch alloy wheels and a lowered sport suspension. The hybrid is distinguished only by a blue Toyota emblem on the grille and special badges on the side and rear doors.

Toyota specialists pay great attention to the equipment of the interiors of their cars. That means six trim levels and a choice of conventional gasoline or gas/electric hybrid engine. Gas-only versions will have several trim levels - LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, Limited and Limited Platinum. All will be available with front-wheel drive or traction-assisted all-wheel drive (AWD). Hybrids should again come in the usual versions: LE, XLE, Limited and Platinum trim. They will feature AWD only, with a dedicated electric motor providing power to the rear wheels as needed.

Buyers of the 2019 Highlander will appreciate the available power-adjustable driver's seat. LE, LE Plus, Hybrid LE and Hybrid XLE models can seat up to eight passengers with three cross-beams in the second and third rows.

Trunk capacity is surprisingly good considering the Highlander's relatively tidy size:

  • There are 13.8 cubic feet behind the third row of seats.
  • Behind the second - 42.3 cubic feet
  • Behind the first is 83.7 cubic feet.

To store small items, the manufacturer has additionally provided a small shelf in the trunk.

The center console is not particularly wide, but it is very deep. All versions except the gas LE are equipped with rear speakers, however, they are not suitable for driver and passenger hands-free operation. The sound spreads too much throughout the cabin and creates an artificial echo.

Specifications

The 3.5-liter six produces 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. It works with an 8-speed automatic transmission transmission

Toyota Highlander 2019, first of all, will attract potential buyers with a new body, while the configuration will remain the same, and the prices will be slightly higher. Real photos will appear towards the end of the year.

The standard gas-powered LE with front-wheel drive will come with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine making 185 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Many analysts are puzzled that Toyota continues to offer this combination. Its EPA fuel economy estimates are worse than those of more powerful and refined V-6s.

Hybrid varieties will be equipped with a 3.5-liter gasoline V-6 that produces 231 horsepower and 215 N/m of torque. It is connected to three electric motors:

  • The first one helps the transmission and starter,
  • The second one helps steer the front wheels,
  • Tritium, if necessary, provides power to the rear wheels.

Hybrids are more than 200 pounds heavier than their gas-powered counterparts, reducing their top speed on the road. The “Eco” transmission reduces the throttle response so much that many buyers of previous lines of this car even contacted service centers, perceiving this as a malfunction.

Silence is a hallmark of the new 2019 Highlander. Thanks to the excellent fit of body parts, wind and road noise are practically inaudible in the cabin. Conventional and hybrid V-6 engines produce a refined growl during acceleration, but it fades at cruising speeds.

Given that there are no powertrain changes, the 2019 EPA ratings should mirror those of the 2018 Highlander. That means the four-cylinder LE will again be rated at 20/24/22 mpg city/highway/combined.

The gas V-6's figures should be approximately 20/27/23 mpg with front-wheel drive and 19/26/22 with AWD. Front-wheel drive LE Plus, XLE, SE, Limited and Platinum trims should once again achieve 21/27/23 mpg ratings. AWD LE Plus will remain at 20/27/23 mpg, while all other AWD grades will return to 20/26/22 ratings.

The Highlander Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient three-row crossover in America, even though it comes standard with AWD and has a curb weight of up to 4,861 pounds. For 2019, LE versions should return 30/28/29 mpg, while the more powerful Limited and Platinum will return 29/27/28. In earlier test results, engineers managed to achieve 27.4 mpg in an even mix of urban and extra-urban cycles.

Innovations introduced by the manufacturer

All Toyota Highlander trims will once again be equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) standard, which is a set of driver assistance features.

Even in the base, the car will be equipped with the following package:

  • Forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian detection;
  • Departure warning with automatic steering correction;
  • Automatic high beam headlights;
  • Radar cruise control to maintain a set distance from forward traffic;
  • Blind spot detection;
  • Emergency braking in case of malfunction of key vehicle components;
  • Rear View Camera;
  • Eight-passenger seats with fabric upholstery;
  • Keyless entry;
  • Five USB ports;
  • Base version of Toyota's Entune entertainment system on a 6.1-inch touchscreen display.

The LE Plus version has a richer package; in addition to all the options listed above, the car is equipped with the following package:

  • Fog lights;
  • Height-adjustable rear door with separate opening glass (a rarity in the class);
  • Three-zone automatic climate control;
  • 8-inch infotainment screen with GPS navigation, accessible via connected smartphone and dedicated app;
  • Driver's seat made of Softex Toyota leatherette.

The XLE line will be even more prestigiously equipped. The buyer receives the following package of options:

  • Sunroof,
  • Leather upholstery for the first two rows of seats (the third row uses SofTex),
  • Heated front seats,
  • Keyless entry with engine start button,
  • Sports seats for driver and front passenger,
  • Built-in GPS navigation,
  • Second row of Captain's seats
  • Side sunblinds
  • Driver Easy Speak, which uses a microphone in the overhead console to amplify the driver's voice through the rear speakers.

The 2019 SE gets 19-inch wheels instead of 18s and unique interior trim. Expect upgraded leather upholstery, driver seat memory, ventilated front seats, a JBL audio system and rear obstacle detection.

The 2019 Platinum range should again get a panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seats (included with Captain's chairs), a surround-view camera, Toyota Safety Connect and forward obstacle detection.

pros

➕ Spacious trunk
➕ Dynamics
➕ Comfortable salon
➕ Noise insulation

The advantages and disadvantages of the 2018-2019 Toyota Highlander in the new body were identified based on reviews from real owners. More detailed pros and cons of Toyota Highlander 3.5 and 2.7 with automatic transmission and 4x4 all-wheel drive can be found in the stories below:

Owner reviews

1. Suspension is fine if you don’t overinflate. Keep it at 2.2 and everything will be fine.

2. The engine is a delight, it’s inaudible and runs reliably. It pulls very quickly at both low and high speeds.

3. Cross-country ability - I didn’t really try it, but I drove onto an ice wall 12 cm high from a turn on the third try. In city snowdrifts it’s fine.

4. Ergonomics - everything is OK with this. It took me a long time to get used to the shelf under the dashboard, but now I can’t imagine without it.

5. Lots of all sorts of gadgets such as lane control, heating and cooling, side car display, etc.

6. Gasoline consumption - on the highway 9.2, average city-highway - 13.6, I use 92nd gasoline.

The music sucks, even with JBL. In general, the multimedia block is stupid. The back door is very leisurely and sometimes lives its own life: it opens, then thoughtfully does not want to open.

Video review

The new Highlander 3 is a huge car, the acceleration is simply a bomb for such a heavy car, the quality of the finish is also good (not a Merc, of course, but for the money it will do).

The driver's seat is perfectly adjustable, I liked it, I really liked the gadget with automatic turning on and off of the high beams, the cruise control is also excellent.

I heard something about a cotton brake pedal - I don’t know, it’s a matter of habit. All-wheel drive has come to the rescue more than once in winter, although it is, of course, conditional and slipping on an automatic transmission risks replacing the gearbox for half a million, so mainly for a comfortable start and light mud).

Opening the trunk with a button is also a plus (be sure to warn at car washes, there are still downs; one of these almost broke the opening mechanism for me). Seat ventilation in summer is a dream for long trips.

Vitaly drives a 2014 Toyota Highlander 3.5 (249 hp) automatic.

I have my own car service. I checked the consumables and found out that the prices were reasonable and the replacements were of good quality. Lexus base. The bodywork is a bit expensive, but that's the price with all new models.

I left the salon. The car is tough - I felt all the bumps and holes. I think that’s why I paid two lemmas. Traveled 60 km. I ordered wheels and tires for 18. Two days later I installed Blizak 18 235 60 winter, a completely different car. Silence and comfort. Complete with 245/55/19 American all-season shorts. No rubber.

Sergey Pavlikov, Review of Toyota Highlander 2.7 (188 hp) automatic, 2014.

Where can I buy?

1. Nimble: after 173 hp. 249 horsepower is super.

2. Noise insulation: I don’t even hear the noise winter tires, engine - of course.

3. The brakes are excellent, I don't understand why others are complaining.

4. The front parking sensors itch in the front, the rear ones make sounds from the back, which is more convenient than in the Camry.

5. Large armrest (I tried it on the Audi Q7, you can put no more than a pack of cigarettes and documents there).

6. Great driver's seat. It clearly records the position of the body, you feel very comfortable, unlike the Camry, where it is not fixed when cornering, and of course there is heating and ventilation.

7. Large trunk, I would say - a huge trunk.

8. Beautiful dashboard trim - stitched leather. Like. And also a niche - you can put every little thing that is in plain sight.

9. The trunk door opens and closes using a button - a small thing, but nice.

FLAWS

1. Small volume of the gas tank - enough for 480-520 km, not enough, you need at least 600 km.

2. The steering wheel is unpleasant to the touch. Better skin.

3. When it lights up low level fuel, it does not display how many kilometers are left.

4. A sloppy navigator is very sloppy. Here the Japanese are weak, or the Americans who collected it.

5. The option included covering the entire front of the car with film - which means the painting is budget-friendly.

Dmitry Krivosheya, drives a 2014 Toyota Highlander 3.5 (249 hp) AT

Engine 3.5 V6. Atmospheric. 249 hp The motor is not bad at all. He is driving. His pleasant bass baritone is enough everywhere - in the city, on the highway when overtaking, on a dirt road. Yes, it is not the most economical, but it does not eat AI-92 best quality no problem. Yes, you have to change six liters of oil in it, but the car is always warm at minus forty.

Tank 78 liters. Taking into account long-distance trips and taking into account the not always frequent gas stations on the highways, I would like more - 90-100 liters.

The suspension is clear and comfortable. Front MacPherson strut, rear multi-link from Lexus RX350. The car drives smoothly and not harshly at the same time. Toyota is very captivated by this suspension. The suspension is not long-travel, since the Highlander is still an asphalt car, but on the road its travel is sufficient.

Khai's geometric cross-country ability is not the best, given the bumper overhangs and short suspension travel. He really doesn't like diagonal hangings. In such cases, the wheels begin to spin helplessly, although the body does not warp. At least all doors, including the trunk, open and close normally. The car has not been tested in hard mud, and probably will not pass.

Salon. Quite comfortable seats without pronounced lateral support. Instead of the word “eco-leather”, let me use the term “dermantine”. So, it is of fairly average quality. Very quickly, creases form on the sides of the dermantine pillow.

The seat adjustments are electric, the driver's seat has a memory for two positions, and besides - pay attention here! — the length of the cushion is adjusted by extending it under the driver’s knees.

Even though the car has 12 speakers from JBL, I can’t say that the sound is super. Not the worst, of course, but nothing more. The amplifier is structurally separated from the head unit and is located somewhere under the armrest.

Review of Toyota Highlander 3.5 with automatic transmission 2015

My consumption in the city is 16-17 liters, on the highway 12-13 liters. The engine has enough power - it shoots when necessary, when overtaking without straining.

Over time, as the first emotions passed, I discovered that the car had short-travel struts, a rattling sub and a dull sensor head, in my opinion they are already writing about this on the forums, and the dealer, according to his words, knows about it.

About two weeks ago I accidentally discovered that the plastic trims on the sills (in the rear door openings) had worn off the paint on these same sills down to the ground. The dealer had a warranty case, they are determining how to fix it.

Review of Toyota Highlander 3.5 (249 hp) AT 2015

The Toyota Highlander crossover is a large and powerful car that combines excellent off-road qualities, spectacular design and unconditional reliability, which has become characteristic feature all cars of this largest Japanese manufacturer.

From 2000 to 2018, 3 generations of the model were released, and at the New York Auto Show in April 2019, Toyota presented the new 4th generation Highlander SUV.

Model history

1st generation

The first mid-size crossover, the Toyota Highlander XU20, was introduced in Japan in 2000 and was known in its homeland as the Kluger. The model was based on the Camry platform and was equipped with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Buyers were offered a choice of modifications with a 5- and 7-seater interior.

The first generation received two significant improvements:

  1. in 2004, instead of 2.4 and 3.0-liter gasoline engines, the crossover received a new 3.3-liter power unit with 225 hp;
  2. in 2005 the first hybrid version was released.

2nd generation

The second generation of the SUV was introduced in 2007. In addition to visual changes in the exterior and interior, the car received a 3.5-liter V6 with a capacity of 270 hp. pp., as well as a package of various options.

In 2010, the restyled 2nd generation Highlander was released, which was presented in Russian car dealerships for many years.

3rd generation

In 2013, the third generation of the crossover was released, the features of which were:

  1. spacious 7-seater saloon;
  2. stylish exterior;
  3. a new line of powerful power units.

Restyling of the 3rd generation

The new Toyota Highlander, shown in the photo, will arrive in car dealerships before 2019, because the presentation of the model took place at the end of 2017 as part of the LA Auto Show. The model successfully competed in the market with such popular crossovers as: Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer and Nissan Pathfinder.

Exterior

The new Highlander, presented in New York, received not only a lot of innovative technological developments, but also a significantly changed design. The 4th generation car has acquired a more streamlined silhouette, in which dynamism is successfully emphasized by an aggressive “look” and spectacular relief.

The exterior of the updated crossover is formed by:

  • a smaller hexagonal radiator grille that features a trendy black grille with chrome trim;
  • a radically new form of head optics, giving the car an aggressive note;
  • massive front bumper with a large air intake and fog lights built into the niches;
  • two-tone mirrors with turn signal repeaters;
  • black pillars creating the original effect of a floating roof;
  • elevated side glazing line;
  • effective stamping of body elements;
  • large wheels R18-R20 with a new design;
  • new shape of the rear lights, which have become even narrower and wider;
  • massive rear bumper with the protection inherent in SUV models and built-in dimensions.

Indeed, the new Highlander turned out to be different from other creations of the brand, which is why, according to experts, the car will attract future owners.

The new product will be produced in two interior variations for 7 and 8 seats. At the same time, passengers in the third row will be quite comfortable even on long trips, because the 4th generation car has added 60 mm in length and, according to Toyota representatives, the entire increase was in the trunk area.

New interior

IN automotive world quality can be seen in the smallest details. Once inside the cabin of this luxury crossover, you immediately understand that the car belongs to the premium class. It is impossible not to note the high quality of materials used in the finishing and design: genuine leather and Alcantara, as well as soft but at the same time resistant to mechanical stress plastic.

The ergonomic and functional interior of the model is formed by:

  • unusual geometry of the console itself;
  • digital instrument panel;
  • 8 or 12.3 inch touch monitor multimedia system(depending on the configuration);
  • a leather steering wheel that has retained the familiar design in the Toyota spirit, and also received an even more convenient location of the control buttons;
  • original design solution for air ducts;
  • new design of the gear selector;
  • spectacular design of the central tunnel under the tree;
  • a large number of niches for storing various small items;
  • comfortable and fairly wide chairs with the ability to make individual settings;
  • multi-zone climate system;
  • powerful JBL acoustics (1200 W), providing excellent sound for passengers in any row;
  • a roof with a panoramic view;
  • background lighting of the interior.

The 2019 model will receive a classic set of color schemes:

  • Blizzard Pearl;
  • Alumina Jade Metallic;
  • Toasted Walnut Pearl;
  • Midnight Black Metallic;
  • Celestial Silver Metallic;
  • Predawn Gray Mica;
  • Salsa Red Pearl;
  • Ooh La La Rouge Mica.

The spaciousness of the new product deserves special attention. Even with the third row folded down, the luggage compartment has a capacity of 456 liters and can accommodate a medium-sized travel bag. By transforming the interior, of course, you can get significantly more space for carrying luggage. Transforming the third row allows you to get a perfectly flat surface, and by folding the second row of seats you can get 2,075 liters of useful volume.

Specifications

The new 2019-2020 Toyota Highlander will be based on the TNGA-K platform, which will make the car a co-platform with the RAV 4 and Camry.

The engine range of the new product includes two options:

Like the previous version, the cars will be equipped with a reliable 6-speed automatic transmission or an innovative 8-speed automatic transmission.

While working to improve the model, Toyota engineers paid special attention to the safety of passengers and the driver.

The car is equipped with the innovative Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 system, which includes a full package of options for the safety of the driver and passengers:

  • set of airbags;
  • adaptive cruise control;
  • lane assist;
  • reading markings and road signs;
  • pedestrian detection;
  • emergency braking system, etc.

In its maximum configuration, the new product will receive four-wheel drive with traction vectoring and the modern Multi-Terrain Select system. Allowing you to select the optimal driving mode taking into account the characteristics of the road surface (including dirt, stones and sand).

Price and start of sales

The new crossover should appear in American car dealerships in December 2019, but it is difficult to say when it will be possible to purchase the new 4th generation Toyota Highlander in Russia.

The manufacturer also promises to tell what the price of the starting configuration and the charged version of one of the largest Toyota SUVs will be closer to the start of sales.

While waiting for details, see the first review of the new Toyota Highlander 2019-2020:

Toyota first presented a mid-size crossover called Highlander in 2000 at the New York Auto Show. The new product used the Camry platform, had all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive, as well as two seating options for 5 and 7 people. Initial sales started in America, after which the car arrived in Australia and Europe. Highlander's competitors include:

  1. Ford Explorer.
  2. Volkswagen Touareg.
  3. Dodge Journey.
  4. Nissan Pathfinder.
  5. Porsche Cayenne.
  6. Audi Q
  7. Mazda CX-9.

The popularity of the model among buyers is ensured by the following advantages:

  • comfort;
  • reliability;
  • safety;
  • equipment;
  • price.

The third generation of the car has been produced since 2013. Despite the fact that the car was restyled in 2017, the company decided to carry out another update. According to experts, when will it be released in 2019? a new version Toyota Highlander, the popularity of the crossover should increase.

Exterior

The presented official photos of the new Toyota Highlander 2019 model year clearly show that the changes to the exterior made by the manufacturer are minimal. First of all, this is due to the fact that the existing design gives the car a classic image of an impressive SUV. But still, the updated version can be distinguished from its predecessor due to the following solutions:

  • an enlarged trapezoidal radiator grille, located from the hood to the lower edge of the front bumper;
  • a larger company logo mounted on the grille;
  • rounded transitions between elements in the front part of the car;
  • modified aerodynamic design of the top rails, which reduces noise when driving;
  • compact combination rear lights;
  • deepened lower stamping in the front part of the crossover.

Despite these minor updates, the execution allows us to add additional features of dynamism and solidity to the appearance of the Highlander.

Interior

The 2019 Toyota Highlander has retained all the existing interior advantages, the main ones of which include:

  • high quality finish;
  • possibility of a three-row design with a capacity of 7 or 8 people;
  • significant number modern systems safety and comfort;
  • high ergonomics.

In addition to the equipment that forms the listed features, the crossover received:

  • new color solutions for interior decoration;
  • the number of USB connectors has increased to six for connecting various gadgets;
  • inserts with improved sound-absorbing properties;
  • increased volume of the central box;
  • additional controls on the multifunction steering wheel;
  • updated software for the infotainment complex.

The crossover also retained the following dimensions:

  • length – 4.89 m;
  • width – 1.93 m;
  • height – 1.77 m;
  • wheelbase - 2.79 m;
  • ground clearance – 20.0 cm;
  • luggage compartment size - 230-1300 l (depending on capacity).

These dimensions make the Highlander one of the largest crossovers in its class.

Equipment

The new 2019 Toyota Highlander model is planned to use gasoline engines with the following technical parameters as power units:

  1. Power – 180.0 l. s., volume – 2.7 l.
  2. Power – 270.0 l. s., volume – 3.5 l.

Both engines will be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, while all-wheel drive will remain the base, front-wheel drive is considered an option.

  1. Limited Platinum.
  2. Limited.
  3. LE Plus.

The list of options for each of the six options will be revised. Among the numerous equipment designed to equip a car, it should be noted:

  • electric power steering;
  • multifunction steering wheel;
  • LED head optics with automatic shut-off function;
  • pressure, light, rain controllers;
  • electrically adjustable, folding exterior mirrors with built-in direction indicators;
  • intelligent entrance to the salon;

  • three-zone climate control;
  • 8-way power adjustable front seats;

  • washer fluid quantity indicator;
  • traction control system;
  • parking sensors;
  • 12 audio speakers;
  • complex for tracking road signs and markings;
  • navigation and infotainment systems.

Start of sales

The updated crossover will initially, at the end of 2018, go on sale in the United States, where it is most popular, especially the eight-seat version. At the same time, the minimum price of the car is declared by the manufacturer in the amount of 32.02 thousand dollars.

The company plans to provide information about when the new Toyota Highlander 2019 model year will go on sale at domestic dealers after the start of North American sales of the new product. The estimated cost for the basic version with front-wheel drive can be 3.0 million rubles.
