The nuclear icebreaker "Soviet Union" is being scrapped. Restoration of the "Soviet Union" Russian nuclear icebreaker Soviet Union

Russian nuclear icebreaker Soviet Union"will not be restored and is subject to disposal, although it was previously planned to extend its service life and use it in projects for the development of the Arctic or use it in the interests of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

In March 2002, during the icebreaker's mooring at the berth in Murmansk, for the first time in practice, its power plant was used to supply onshore facilities. At the same time, the power of the installation reached 50 MW. The experiment was successful, but was deemed unprofitable. The decrease in the volume of work in the Arctic at one time led to the fact that the "Soviet Union" was left without loading, was decommissioned and moored. In 2014, the leadership of Rosatom decided to restore the nuclear-powered ship by 2018 in order to provide new Russian Arctic projects. It was assumed that after extending the life of the reactor plant, the Soviet Union could serve another 20 years.

Earlier it was reported that Rosatom proposed to the Ministry of Defense to create a floating command post for the Arctic group of the Russian Armed Forces on the Sovetsky Soyuz icebreaker, but since the icebreaker is redundant in power, its use for the needs of the Armed Forces was recognized as economically inexpedient, RIA Novosti reports.

They are terrified and utterly afraid of the very name of the ship.
Perhaps so. It is somehow hard to believe that the reason is "lack of work" due to sanctions, and even more so, "the icebreaker is redundant in power" for the needs of our Navy, due to "economic inexpediency" ... Well, the bad guys are burning ! This is despite the fact that the ship's age is far from being critical, especially considering the thick icebreaking hull, and especially considering the timing of the construction of new ships, of which only patrol boats can be considered "quick-firing". What prevents the gentlemen from using the feature of the Arktika project, which allows them to quickly convert an icebreaker into a cruiser? Who is the conductor of such a symphony of stupidity ... The finished T-95 tank (object 195), which passed State tests, cut down in 2010, since the tank, as stated, is too expensive and difficult for conscripts. Further, of course, in order to save money, they “invent” platforms that have long existed in the army in order to utilize all Soviet stocks of tanks and fill up the army with new mastodon hippos such as T-15, Kurganets, Boomerang (if not with piece assembly, then very far from the pace of production in Soviet time). Under the project of the Armata platform, according to Vladimir Putin, 64 billion rubles are spent on R&D and R&D, almost five years after 2010, in order to roll out raw "platforms" for the Victory Parade that have not been tested, not put into service, spending more millions for show, instead of buying real equipment for the army. There is always an axiom that only reliable, time-tested and mastered by industry technology, technologically advanced, and relatively cheap, becomes a platform. The bourgeois appoint a tank as a "platform", which has a cost of about 400 million, and which, all the more, is not for conscripts in terms of complexity. On the basis of such a "goldfish" they want to do a total rearmament, with the total destruction of tank stocks of the Soviet period. This is despite the fact that the same self-propelled guns "Coalition" are perfectly placed on the T-90 base, like many other equipment, it will completely do without a platform from the T-14. The T-14 itself is being deprived of the main thing for which the Soviet Union began to make object 195 - a 152 mm gun, and with a 125 mm gun, the tank does not have significant advantages over the modernized T-90. They steal billions, spend fucking money on PR projects, but to convert the Sovetsky Soyuz icebreaker into a warship, just modernize it, the toad strangled it ... This is strong. Probably, indeed, the name "Soviet Union" alone scares like hell incense, but to rename it is afraid in front of the people.

Too powerful ... so you need to cut the belay on needles, yes, the logic is iron. 89 year of construction is not the age limit for a vessel, especially such a unique one. And who recognized it as unprofitable ?? I suppose the next "effective" managers. So that it doesn’t work out as it happened before, the rooster will peck and again rent over the hill, because they effectively disposed of their own or sold it. Some kind of crazy move a la nineties am

... The specialists of Rosatom could do the installation, they can do it (at least it’s no more difficult than building a nuclear one in Turkey for free), and working on the hull is also not from the realm of fantasy.

everything is more difficult. by and large, this is a nuclear reactor around which an icebreaker was built. who worked in difficult ice conditions. moved back and forth. vibrations and more. all this destroys it is not very sickly so to speak. you can extend its term by 20-30 years, but this is almost as expensive as building a new one. if they had found a case for him, they would have extended it, but you can see for yourself. It's a pity, of course, but everyone says that this is the only way out. he's not the first one. Siberia last year also wanted to be cut into metal. deadlines have expired.

Let them build it. They will put a similar project next to the wall, and only then they talk about recycling and the like. While semi-tugs-semi-icebreakers capable of walking in broken ice have been built, but not as a full-fledged replacement. Following the example of the work on the Tu-160, it naturally turned out that "sawing" is much easier than picking up lost production bit by bit. And this whole epic with the scrapping of the icebreaker fleet generally resembles at least the lobbying of comrades "dividers-utilizers" - to break not to build. There is a strong dissonance between the announced new wave of Arctic exploration and the simultaneous burial of icebreakers.

The icebreaker is fairly recent construction. It's a pity that it is. Apparently, the costs of repairs and upgrades are so high that it is much easier to build a new one from scratch. Apparently, icebreakers of the LK-60Ya type (project 22220) will replace it.

No, he suffered the same fate as the Mir station. We don't need the Arctic or outer space. It is China that is completing construction of 2 icebreakers of this class. China needs them to navigate our northern sea route. White dragon and the second forgot. And we are the most powerful. And once there were our polar stations at the North Pole and there was nothing to do. There was something to study. And there was enough money for everything.

"The icebreaker Sovetsky Soyuz, unfortunately, is being scrapped. An official order has been signed," RIA Novosti reported. CEO enterprises of the state corporation "Rosatom" FSUE "Atomflot" ("Rosatomflot") Vyacheslav Ruksha.

Earlier it was reported that Rosatom proposed to the Ministry of Defense to create a floating command post for the Arctic group of the Russian Armed Forces on the icebreaker Sovetsky Soyuz.

"This is a little different. When the questions arose of providing for those bases that the Ministry of Defense had restored in the Arctic, we made such an assessment. Unfortunately, the icebreaker is redundant in terms of power, and (in its use for the needs of the Armed Forces. - Approx. Ed.) No economic feasibility," Ruksha said.

The main activities of FSUE Atomflot (became part of Rosatom in 2008) are: icebreaking support for Arctic hydrocarbon projects; icebreaking assistance to vessels in the waters of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) and to freezing ports of the Russian Federation; provision of a range of port fleet services in the port of Sabetta; icebreaking support for scientific expeditions in the Arctic; Maintenance and carrying out repair work of the general ship and special purpose; safe handling of nuclear materials and radioactive waste. The nuclear icebreaker fleet currently includes: two nuclear icebreakers with a two-reactor nuclear power plant with a capacity of 75 thousand hp. (“Yamal”, “50 years of Victory”), two icebreakers with a single-reactor plant with a capacity of about 50 thousand liters. With. ("Taimyr", "Vaigach"), nuclear lighter-container carrier "Sevmorput" with a reactor plant with a capacity of 40 thousand liters. With. and 5 service vessels. At present, a series of universal nuclear icebreakers of project 22220 (Arktika, Ural and Sibir) with a capacity of 60 MW each is being built in St. Petersburg. The new icebreakers will have a variable draft, which will allow them to perform the tasks of both linear (Arktika type) and shallow draft (Taimyr type) nuclear icebreakers.

Decided to dispose of the Russian nuclear icebreaker "Soviet Union". It will not be restored, although earlier there were plans to use it in projects for the development of the Arctic or use it in the interests of .

The Russian nuclear icebreaker "Soviet Union" is being scrapped. This was reported by RIA Novosti Vyacheslav Ruksha, General Director of the enterprise of the state corporation Rosatom FSUE Atomflot (Rosatomflot).

“The icebreaker “Soviet Union”, unfortunately, is being disposed of. An official order was signed,” Ruksha said.

What is the reason?

Ruksha explained that the reason for this decision was the sanctions of Western countries against Russia. “Due to the effect of Western sanctions on the joint project of Rosneft and the American ExxonMobil for the extraction of hydrocarbons on the shelf of the Kara Sea, the icebreaker was “out of work,” said the head of Rosatomflot.

He also said that the issue of using the icebreaker by the Arctic group of the RF Armed Forces was being studied. But for this purpose, it turned out to be redundant in terms of power and there is no economic feasibility in its use, Ruksha explained.

What did the icebreaker do?

Since 2010, the "Soviet Union" has not been operated. It was withdrawn from the fleet due to a decrease in the volume of work in the Arctic.

However, in 2014, the leadership of Rosatom decided to restore the nuclear-powered ship by 2018 and use it in new offshore projects. It was assumed that he would be able to move in the ice at a speed of 12-14 knots (22-26 km / h). After extending the resource of the reactor plant, the Sovetsky Soyuz could serve another 20 years.

What are the characteristics of an icebreaker?

The Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker of the Arktika class Sovetsky Soyuz was commissioned in 1989. The peculiarity of the icebreaker is that it was designed in such a way that it could be retrofitted into a battle cruiser in a short time.

"Soviet Union" was used for Arctic tourism and in scientific purposes. In 2004, he was one of three icebreakers that participated in research on the impact of global warming in the Arctic.

In the Murmansk region, the restoration of the nuclear icebreaker "Soviet Union" is coming to an end. The ship should return to service this year. It will replace the Rossiya icebreaker, which needs to refuel its reactor.

The nuclear-powered ship inherited from the name not only power and efficiency, but also, as they say, a difficult fate. The ship had the most work in the 90s, but then for several years it, forgotten and unclaimed, stood at the pier awaiting disposal. However, in 2013, the Rossiya icebreaker was decommissioned. To fill this gap, it was decided to restore the "Soviet Union".

At the first stage, the resource of the reactor plant will be increased to 150,000 hours, which is approximately 8 years of continuous operation. The main place of operation of the icebreaker will be the Kara Sea and the Ob basin. The construction of the largest Yamal LNG project is underway there. The total investment in the creation of a gas liquefaction plant and a seaport in the Arctic is estimated at one trillion rubles.

The nuclear-powered ships of the Arktika project are surprisingly reliable and versatile. Soviet engineers even envisioned their use as warships. Few people know that there is a regular place for the installation of artillery pieces.

The extension of the service life of nuclear-powered ships of the Arktika type will give shipbuilders time to create icebreakers of the new type LK-60. The Baltic Shipyard will build three new ships for Atomflot. The project is completely domestic: both customers and builders have calculated that no possible sanctions will stop the construction process or delay it.

The Northern Sea Route only increases transit every year. In the past navigation, the volume of transported cargo amounted to almost 1.5 million tons, forecasts for the future - 10-15 million tons annually.

Let's take a closer look at the history of this ship...

Icebreaker « Soviet Union"- a Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker of the Arktika class, built at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg. Launched on October 31, 1986, commissioned in 1989. Included in and used by the Murmansk Shipping Company.

The icebreaker is designed in such a way that it can be retrofitted into a warship in a short time. Some of this equipment is in a mothballed state on board, and some is in coastal warehouses. In particular, a fire control radar of the MP-123 detachable artillery mount was installed on the tank in front of the felling.

In 1991, 1992, 1997 and 1998 Soviet Union” served for Arctic tourism. During the transpolar cruise from July 27 to August 16, 1991, 5 automatic meteorological ice stations (No. 20,21,23,18,26) and one American meteorological buoy No. I.D.7058 were installed on board drifting ice. Installation methods - carrying stations from the icebreaker to the selected ice floe or delivery of stations to the drifting ice floe by the icebreaker's helicopter.

During a transpolar cruise in 1992, under the command of the captain of the nuclear-powered ship "Soviet Union" Gorshkovsky A.G., at the parking lot at the North Pole on August 23, 1992, the Andreevsky flag and the flag of the city of St. Petersburg were raised on the flagpole of the vessel in honor of Russian sailors and shipbuilders " Baltic Plant" in the city of St. Petersburg. The hoisting of the flags was carried out by the passenger assistant to the captain Rumyantsev N.N.

In March 2002, during the icebreaker's mooring at the berth in Murmansk, for the first time in practice, its power plant was used to supply onshore facilities. At the same time, the power of the installation reached 50 megawatts. The experiment was successful, but was considered unprofitable.

In 2004, he was one of three icebreakers participating in research on the effects of global warming in the Arctic.

The service life of the icebreaker is set at 25 years. In 2007-2008, the Baltic Shipyard supplied equipment for the Sovetsky Soyuz icebreaker, which makes it possible to extend the life of the vessel.

Currently (2012), the icebreaker, which has been berthed by Rosatomflot for the fifth year, is planned to be restored, but only after a specific customer is identified or until transit along the Northern Sea Route is increased and new work areas appear.

Here is what the Arctic Star newspaper wrote in August 2008:

Any member of the crew of nuclear icebreakers who took part in voyages to the North Pole with foreign tourists on board can surely remember many funny and interesting stories about these travels.
One of them, detective, I will tell you now.

In the summer of 1992, the Soviet Union nuclear-powered icebreaker opened its second season as a cruise ship. About a hundred passengers from seven different countries gazed with all their eyes not only at the Arctic, but also at the icebreaker with its crew, and we, in turn, looked with interest at tourists and foreign service personnel.
It was mainly the elderly audience that went to the North Pole. One of the decrepit grandfathers became ill in Murmansk, so much so that he had to be taken to the hospital, and from there home. There was also a very young tourist from the USA, thirteen years old, on board. His grandmother took him with her, the most ordinary in appearance, of which we also have many. Only Russian grandmothers usually take their grandchildren to the village, and this grandmother - to the North Pole.
The boy felt like a real conqueror of the harsh Arctic, Jule Verne Captain Hatteras. Only one detail brought him grief. Traveling in the same cabin with your grandmother is not so romantic. What do you want to do if there are no free cabins? The crew members, too, after all, lived in cramped conditions, no higher than the forecastle deck, freeing up regular cabins for foreigners.
And so I decided young hero escape from under the grandmother's wing to the chess salon with their belongings and continue the journey there. The chess room had a sofa, armchairs, and a table. Unfortunately, there was no door.
Having lost her beloved grandson, the grandmother sounded the alarm. The passenger assistant easily found the fugitive and persuaded him to return to his place.
In the evening of the same day, the captain of the icebreaker Anatoly Grigoryevich Gorshkovsky called me. He looked worried about something.
"Aleksey Arkadyevich," said the captain. - There was an accident on the ship. The American boy lost his video camera. He, the fool, left her unattended in the chess salon, and then did not find her. You understand, a shadow has been cast on our crew. You are a special communications officer, a reserve officer of the special services, and the cards are in your hands. I ask you to find the loss and return it to its owner.
Any sailor knows that the captain's request is an order, and not following the captain's order is already a reprimand. Showing enthusiasm on my face and adjusting my glasses, which were always falling off my nose, I rushed to conduct an investigation, deciding to start by interviewing possible witnesses. Unfortunately, there were none. Conversation with the victim and inspection of the chess salon to positive results also not brought.
To be honest, my specialty does not provide for serious knowledge of operational skills, and I have never been fond of reading detective stories. One day of the flight was followed by another, but my investigation was marking time. Voluntary assistants and advisers were of no use at all.
The icebreaker successfully reached the Pole. It was raining, the air temperature was +2 degrees Celsius. The usual program began with the installation of flags, a round dance around an imaginary earth's axis, fried sausages and swimming in an ice hole.

Photo 5.

However, this time there was a highlight: the Soviet Union brought and unloaded the Moskvich-2141 car onto the ice of the North Pole. Believe it or not, the leadership of AZLK wanted to promote its products to the West with such an unusual step. Although this miracle of the Russian auto industry flatly turned out to start, at an impromptu auction it was sold for 12 thousand dollars to the owner of a network of gas stations from the United States, and later safely delivered to a happy buyer at home. Thus, a historical maximum price for Moskvich-2141 was set.
Alas, the American boy could not capture on film such vivid events in his life. Looking at him, I felt guilty. Oh, how not easy it is to be Holmes, Poirot and Aniskin in one bottle in the vast expanses of the Arctic Ocean!
The holiday ended, people cleaned up after themselves the garbage and boarded, and the icebreaker set off on the return journey. After that, a little more than a day passed, and the captain called me to his place. “Probably wants to hear a report on the progress of the investigation,” I thought. But Anatoly Grigorievich said the following without questioning:
- Today, at about three o'clock in the morning, the officer on duty saw someone throw a plastic black bag of garbage overboard. It is possible that the thief, concerned about the investigation, decided to get rid of the video camera in this way.
"Very likely," I agreed. - Of course, it is really possible to hide a thing on a ship so that it will be difficult to find it. However, it will be difficult for a thief to take out the stolen in Murmansk. We're on the alert.
- So, I will ask you to fly by helicopter for this very bag and check if there is a camera in it or not. Yeah, take a photo of the icebreaker from the air as well, okay?
Half an hour later, with a life jacket under my arm and a Zenit-E camera around my neck, I hurried to the helipad. The captain allowed to take hydrologist Boris Pashchenko, a true ace of ice intelligence, with him on the flight. When I jumped into the Ka-32 helicopter, I found that the hydrologist had already put on the only free headsets, sitting down in the regular navigator's seat. I flopped down on a hard side bench and we immediately took off without delay.
Unlike the good old Mi-2 helicopter, which sings a characteristic whistling song to passengers in flight, the Ka-32 brought down a bass tractor roar on my poor head. On official business, I had to fly often, but for short distances. This time the flight was clearly delayed.
The commander and hydrologist carefully examined the ice, behind their backs the flight engineer was thinking about something of his own, occasionally glancing at the dashboard. The temporarily unemployed navigator and I sat opposite each other on narrow benches and got bored.

Photo 6.

The navigator with a headset was fine, but I kept waiting for my ears to get used to the roar of running engines. A man, after all, is such a creature that he gets used to everything. The cabin of the Ka-32 is small and uncomfortable, the gearbox casing hangs ugly from the ceiling, little can be seen through the side windows.
Forty minutes later, a big-eyed hydrologist managed to find a mysterious bag. I was ready to land: I took off my bulky jacket and camera, putting on a life jacket right over my sweater. The caring navigator gave me a hook and opened the door. The helicopter hovered over the ice field, barely touching its landing gear. It was dangerous for a heavy car to completely sit on the ice.
Jumping down, I began to carefully approach the bag, blackening at the edge of a large lead. The helicopter flew off to the side so as not to create a man-made snowstorm for me with propellers. My legs sank into the snow almost to my knees, I felt the road ahead of me with a hook so as not to fall into a hidden crack. Cautiously reaching out to the bag, I grabbed it with a death grip and began to quickly move away from the unpleasant streak in my footsteps.
The helicopter went down again. I wanted to foolishly look at him at that moment, raising my head up. And what do you think, a hurricane from powerful propellers hooliganly brushed my glasses off my face right into the snow! Definitely, bespectacled paratroopers are useless.
From open door the navigator and flight mechanic hurried me up from the helicopter, and I was looking for my glasses on all fours. By some miracle, the eyepieces were still found.
- Welcome back, "Santa Claus"! - with a laugh, the navigator patted my shoulder already in the cockpit of the helicopter. Santa Claus is because of my huge plastic bag and the snow that helicopter propellers generously showered me from head to toe.
Ka-32 headed straight for the "Soviet Union". Along the way, we descended over one of the chains of hummocks and hovered, peering down: first, to the hydrologist, and then to everyone else, the oddly protruding ice floes seemed very similar to an unknown crashed plane. What if we finally found the missing N-209 Sigismund Levanevsky? Alas, it turned out to be a game of nature and nothing more.
Indeed, a person gets used to everything. During the flight back, I dozed off, ceasing to pay attention to the deafening roar. Then I feel that the navigator is shaking me. I open my eyes and see: he is pushing me to the open door, and the helicopter is still flying. I don't understand anything from sleep. Maybe the navigator went crazy?

After all, you wanted to photograph the Soyuz from the air, come on, move closer to the door, I'll insure you! - he shouted, girdling me with a special belt.
To be honest, I completely forgot about the camera. I managed to take some beautiful pictures, as it seemed to me at the time. Sparkling with a red superstructure, the handsome nuclear icebreaker was just under the helicopter.
After landing, I was deeply disappointed. Firstly, the delivered bag contained only food waste and plastic utensils. Secondly, none of the photographs of the icebreaker turned out. The reason for this was the low-quality film "Svema", which I bought from my hands before leaving for the flight. There were times of general shortages, 1992, by the way.
And yet, this detective story had a happy ending.
The honor of our crew was not tarnished. The video camera "surfaced" in one of the members of the foreign service personnel, just a couple of days after returning to Murmansk. The find was immediately sent to the happy owner.
Remembering the events described above more than fifteen years ago, just in case, I teach young sailors: “Russian icebreakers never leave garbage in the Arctic. When one rotozey once dropped a bag of waste overboard, we had to fly back by helicopter and clean up after him.”
