It is obvious that both reflux condensers are much inferior in performance to a specialized distiller. The use of reflux condensers in distillation mode is rather an emergency, forced mode. You shouldn't rely on it.

The 1250th reflux condenser is made inclined with a cooling jacket and internal reflux return. Unused fittings are simply plugged with silicone tubes. It is used mainly for small column diameters - 25 and 29 mm, especially if you need to gain a few centimeters in height. Yes, yes - just a few centimeters.

HD/4-1250R has a height of 150 mm, and HD/4-1750R – 220 mm. So the savings are only 7 cm. Whether this gain is commensurate with the decrease in productivity, controllability and deterioration in the quality of the product - everyone decides for himself.

The main disadvantage of inclined reflux condensers is excessive supercooling of the reflux and a relatively large area of ​​contact of alcohol vapor with air.

It is known that during the rectification of alcohol, the column “breathes” through the TCA (atmosphere communication tube). Alcohol vapor is heavier than air, so a more or less clear separation occurs, a contact zone between hot alcohol vapor and air. This zone is horizontal and limited by the walls of the reflux condenser. In it, during the entire rectification, the oxidation of alcohol to aldehydes occurs. If the goal is to obtain ultra-pure rectified alcohol that exceeds the requirements of GOST, then inclined reflux condensers are not used, since their contact zone is several times higher than that of vertical ones.

For a more productive column with an internal diameter of 35 mm, and if the main task is to obtain alcohol, it is preferable to use HD/4-1750R. It will also come to the rescue if the temperature of the cooling water at the inlet is above +25-30 °C. Considering the small difference in price (about 500 rubles), this model is quite popular.

HD/4-1750R – vertical reflux condenser with Dimroth refrigerator. It is much easier and more clearly regulated, has more power, and also has an internal reflux return to the column. But its selection unit is of a glass type, so the reflux is not centered, as in a baffle reflux condenser, but flows down the walls of the inner pipe - a very controversial decision, since there is no uniform wetting of the nozzle. The slightest distortion of the column, deviation from the vertical and phlegm will flow under one of the walls of the column. As they say, with all the ensuing consequences.
