Father Vasily, in the world Vasily Nikolaevich Novikov, was born from pious parents Nikolai Evgenievich and Nadezhda Vasilievna Novikov on January 14, 1949. After him, three children were born into the family - Lydia, Ivan and Sergei. The Novikov family lived in the village of Rakitino, Novomoskovsk district Tula region. We lived in a small house. The family was very religious. Father Vasily’s grandmother, Elder Pelageya Rakitinskaya, went to Jerusalem on foot twice in her life, from where she brought many shrines. The Lord endowed her with the gift of insight and healing of mental and physical ailments. Many people came to her for help and simply asking for prayers. At the birth of Vasily, the old woman predicted that a “shepherd to the cross” would be born in this family and began to cry. “Shepherd” means a shepherd of the verbal sheep, a priest - in tribulation, “on the cross.” Elder Pelageya had two children: Nikolai, Vasily’s father, and Nina, his aunt, to whom, after the death of her mother, people also turned for prayer and help and received it.

Vasily's childhood was spent in village labors and worries. He herded cows, rode horses, helped his parents, helped his parents cultivate their gardens and fields, and did housekeeping and carpentry work. Mother (later nun Nadezhda) was a nurse by profession. After the death of her husband, in addition to household chores, she worked at the Epiphanian Church of St. John the Baptist, located eight kilometers from their village. She lit lamps there, stoked the stoves, cooked food and helped as best she could to her spiritual father, Father Archpriest Mikhail (Chudakov). Mother Nadezhda herself was an ascetic of piety: she prayed a lot, worked, and fasted. From the age of forty I gave up meat: on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, the first and last week During Lent I ate nothing except prosphora and holy water. About twenty years before her death, she completely eliminated fast food and fish and until last days made prostrations. Mother was familiar with Matrona Sebenskaya (now famous as Moscow). The blessed one once slept on the stove in the house of Elder Pelagia. Mother Nadezhda, worried about her children, went to Matronushka for advice, to which the old woman told her: “If you want Vasily to turn out to be a good boy, pay two hundred bows for him every day.” She fulfilled this covenant strictly.

Mother from the very early childhood began to accustom children to prayerful work and visiting the temple of God. They did not join either the Pioneers or the Komsomol, they always wore crosses. Vasily often visited the Epiphanian Church, as well as the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra. The Lavra singing especially sank into the boy’s heart and remained to live in him until his last breath. Vasily had an excellent musical memory, so during Divine services he often stood next to the choir and sang along with it. How strictly Mother Nadezhda raised her son Vasily can be seen from the stories of the priest himself. He often said that as a child, his mother followed him with a stick to prevent him from picking up bad habits. When Vasily was three years old, the spiritual father of the family, a perspicacious elder, Archpriest Mikhail, came to visit them at home. The father put his skufa on the boy’s head and said: “If only, Vasily, your head would be like mine!” This prophecy has come true.

Upon completion of eight classes at Epifanskaya secondary school Vasily was drafted into the army, into the Northern Sea Fleet. Served for three years on a submarine. He was respected by everyone for his conscientious service. When the cook on the ship got sick, they put Vasily in charge. So the priest learned to cook well. Upon returning from service, he entered the Junction Railway School as an assistant driver. From ship to railway. Having passed the exams with flying colors, Vasily began working in this profession. Soon he goes on assignment to the Saratov region, Ershov, where he meets his future wife, Valentina. Marries in 1973. The Novikov family lived in the town of Uzlovaya, Tula region. They had three children - Natalia, Mikhail and Alexander. Vasily was placed in a leadership position, but Vasily was offered the highest service - the priesthood - serving God at the Holy See. The choice was Vasily's. The wife was against it, saying that she was marrying a driver, not a priest. Having prayed to God for admonition, Vasily lay down to rest. That night, in a dream, his wife saw in her dream a terrible huge monster heading towards her. She jumped up in horror and after this vision softened a little.

Vasily went for prayerful help to the relics of the Great Russian saint - St. Sergius of Radonezh, whom he loved from early virginity. Standing at the shrine and fervently praying, Vasily receives admonition: “How can I exchange serving God for temporary service to the world.” The choice has been made. Doubts disappeared.

On April 18, 1993, on Lazarus Saturday, Vasily was ordained a deacon, and the next day, on the Feast of the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday), he was ordained a priest. So, through the prayers of Rev. Sergius, service to God, Russia and the people began. Sent to serve Fr. Vasily in the village of Spasskoye, Novomoskovsk district, Tula region and the Temple of the Exaltation of the Honest Trees Life-giving Cross The Lord's. Having put a lot of work into restoring this temple, he is given another temple in a neighboring village, almost destroyed. Father with God's help, with the help of parishioners and benefactors, restores this temple in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God.

In 1997 at Holy Week During Great Lent, Fr.’s wife dies. Vasily. After which he finally stops living in the village. Spasskoye. Constantly taking care of church splendor and decorum: painting the temple, building a baptismal, almshouse, etc. choir singing, Sunday school for children and adults. The priest did not forget about spiritual feats: night vigils, unceasing prayer, reading spiritual books and patristic writings. Since 2003, night vigils have been held in the Spassky Church: reading akathists and psalms. In addition to all of the above, the priest cared for a huge number of people. Those who came to him received spiritual help and left inspired. For his zealous, pure service, the Lord rewarded Fr. Vasily with various spiritual gifts: fiery and bold prayer, clairvoyance, healing of souls and bodies, reasoning, expulsion of unclean spirits, etc. The blind received their sight, the paralytic stood up, the lame walked without assistance, cancer patients, bleeding patients were healed, and many other diseases were healed by the Lord through his pleaser - oh. Vasily.

On April 4, 2006, with the blessing of the bishop, Father Vasily received secret monastic tonsure from two hieromonks serving in the Russian Orthodox Church MP, while maintaining his name. On the same day, with the blessing of the Bishop, 17 more people were tonsured into monasticism. Thus began the creation of the monastery. By the example of his life, the priest guided many to salvation. He revered St. Martyr Tsar Nicholas as the redeemer of the sins of the Russian people, went to the Rite of Repentance in the village. Taininskoye himself held it several times in his church. The priest also prayed for the restoration of autocratic Tsarist power to save Russia.

In 2008, Fr. Vasily was forced to sign a petition for the staff, and he began to serve at home, applying the 15th rule of the Double Council of Constantinople (Part 2).

Father did not forget about the poor, hungry, wretched, large families, orphanages and invalids, he spiritually cared for the Cossacks and inspired them to fight against the enemies of the Faith, the Tsar and the Fatherland: he loved children, gave gifts, and was present at children's Sunday school events.

Father Vasily was a zealous denouncer of globalism and ecumenism, for which his followers in power accused him of extremism.

In the spring of 2010, the priest became seriously ill. Losing strength, he did not stop serving, saying: “I don’t need anything, as long as the Lord gives me strength to serve the Liturgy.”

November 4, 2010 in the village. Ivankovo was the consecration of the font over the source, in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, built through the efforts of Fr. Vasily and his spiritual children.

Anticipating his imminent death, the priest makes his dying will, leaving behind him the duties of the abbess - mon. Natalia, and as confessor - Hierom. Alexandra (later Hierosch. Theodora)

The day before his departure to the Lord, the priest for the last time received unction and received the Holy Mysteries of Christ, which he received this time from bodily exhaustion while lying down, but in full memory and with a deep feeling of tenderness. On November 11, at about 7 o’clock in the morning, while reading the canon on the separation of the soul from the body, the priest peacefully, with a smile on his face, gave up his righteous soul in the hands of God.

The death of our reverend father Vasily was peaceful and quiet, simple and at the same time majestic, like his whole life, which faded away like the dawn of a bright day, leaving in the hearts of those devoted to him a quiet night of sadness. On this day, the Lord miraculously gathered all the priests of one spirit in one place to honor the death of the righteous man. The sun “played” like on Easter. A rainbow appeared in the cemetery. The burial of Father Vasily took place in front of a huge crowd of people who came from all over Russia to celebrate last way beloved father and mentor, and approached the bright spiritual celebration. When saying goodbye to the priest, the possessed could not immediately approach the coffin. You can say in the words of Rev. Anthony of Optina: “I don’t know, we, poor from good deeds, will be honored with such great prayerful memory of ourselves as our blessed elder was honored with, whose holy soul will dwell in good things. The words of God are true: For those who glorify Him I will glorify Me (1 Samuel 2:30). And just as this old man loved everyone in his life, so with his death he gathered many for his grave.”

The lamp of God, enlightening the souls of people with the light of Christ's faith and love in difficult and difficult times, has gone out.

Since the beginning of 2012, in photographs of Fr. Vasily began to experience redness, which intensified over time. On November 26, 2012, for the first time, the image of the priest abundantly poured myrrh. Myrrh-streaming continues to this day.

We believe that our father Vasily will stand before the Throne of the Holy Trinity in the ranks of the Russian saints, not abandoning the monastery and us sinners with his auspicious prayers.

Reverend Father Vasily, pray to God for us!

P.S. Cemetery address - village. Ivankovo, Kimovsky district, Tula region. You can drive from Novomoskovsk, from the city of Sokolniki (now the Sokolniki microdistrict), to the turn to Ivankovo and then walk about three kilometers. On the day of death Fr. Vasily on the portal “Moscow - Third Rome” the following message was published:

    Excerpt characterizing Novikov, Vasily

From the hall of the nobility the sovereign went into the hall of the merchants. He stayed there for about ten minutes. Pierre, among others, saw the sovereign leaving the merchants' hall with tears of tenderness in his eyes. As they later learned, the sovereign had just begun his speech to the merchants when tears flowed from his eyes, and he finished it in a trembling voice. When Pierre saw the sovereign, he went out, accompanied by two merchants. One was familiar to Pierre, a fat tax farmer, the other was a head, with a thin, narrow beard, yellow face. They both cried. The thin man had tears in his eyes, but the fat farmer wept like a child and kept repeating:
    - Take life and property, Your Majesty!
Pierre no longer felt anything at that moment except the desire to show that he didn’t care about anything and that he was ready to sacrifice everything. His speech with a constitutional direction appeared to him as a reproach; he was looking for an opportunity to make amends for this. Having learned that Count Mamonov was donating the regiment, Bezukhov immediately announced to Count Rostopchin that he was giving up a thousand people and their contents.
Old man Rostov could not tell his wife what had happened without tears, and he immediately agreed to Petya’s request and went to record it himself.
The next day the sovereign left. All the assembled nobles took off their uniforms, again settled in their houses and clubs and, grunting, gave orders to the managers about the militia, and were surprised at what they had done.

In Russian Orthodox Church A tradition has been established to canonize only those righteous people whose death a significant period of time has passed. However, there have always been and are saints of God, whose piety has earned such ardent love from their contemporaries that universal rumor glorifies them long before the decision of the Holy Synod. Hieromonk Vasily (Novikov) is such an unofficial, but revered saint among the people. A book about his life, compiled by nun Natalya (Andronova) and called “The Good Shepherd,” formed the basis of this article.

    Grandson of Elder Pelagia

On January 14, 1949, the first-born was born into the pious Russian family of Nikolai Evgenievich and Nadezhda Vasilievna Novikov, who lived in the village of Rakitino, Tula Region, and was named Vasily in holy baptism. After him, the Lord sent his parents three more children - brothers Sergei and Ivan, as well as sister Lydia.

The family into which the future shepherd was born has been closely associated with Orthodoxy for a long time. Their fellow villagers still cherish the memory of his grandmother Pelageya, who deservedly gained the glory of an old woman. Even in the distant pre-revolutionary years, she twice made walking pilgrimages to Jerusalem. Old-timers said that after the first such trip, the gift of foresight began to clearly manifest itself in her.

Thus, she predicted with amazing accuracy events that were yet to happen. Having been honored to visit the Holy Land for the second time, Elder Pelageya (that’s how everyone in the area called her from then on) showed amazing examples of healing the sick and casting out demons. The future hieromonk Vasily (Novikov) witnessed all this in his early years.

He himself recalled more than once how, with wild screams, a demoniac, brought to grandmother Pelageya for healing, broke from his chains, and how he suddenly fell silent and spoke in a calm, intelligible voice after she, having sprinkled him with holy water, read a prayer. Of course, such scenes, of which there were many, left an indelible imprint on the developing consciousness of the teenager.

The early years of the future zealot of the faith

The parents themselves played an important role in the religious upbringing of their son - deeply pious people who built their lives according to the commandments of God and in accordance with the traditions of Orthodoxy. As a result, while attending a Soviet school as a child, Hieromonk Vasily (Novikov) managed to remain a true Christian, untainted by atheistic nihilism. It should be noted that he, like the rest of the children in their family, never joined either the Pioneer or Komsomol organizations.

Like most rural children, Vasily and early years He got involved in work, helping his parents in the garden and in the field, grazing livestock and collecting firewood. It was especially difficult for him after his father died as a result of a serious illness, and his mother, who worked as a nurse in a district hospital, was left alone with four children.

Their family forever retained the memory of one very unusual circumstance associated with last days life of Nikolai Evgenievich. Subsequently, they said that shortly before his death, the image of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, which was their ancestral shrine, suddenly faded, placed in the red corner. The change in him was so significant that the features imprinted on him became almost indistinguishable. When the soul of the deceased left the body, the icon took on its previous appearance.

A kind word about Nadezhda Vasilyevna Novikova

By the way, having become a widow, Nadezhda Vasilyevna was even more filled with religious feelings. Despite the extreme busyness caused by household chores and everyday work, she spent a lot of time in the Church of John the Baptist, located eight kilometers from the village, where, in addition to participating in divine services, she helped as much as she could to its rector and her spiritual father, Archpriest Mikhail (Chudakov).

In the last two decades, Nadezhda Vasilyevna voluntarily imposed on herself the food restrictions adopted by the monks. She never ate meat, and on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays her entire daily diet consisted only of prosphora washed down with holy water. At every opportunity, Nadezhda Vasilyevna made pilgrimages to places where she took her children with her.

Subsequently, Hieromonk Vasily (Novikov), whose photo is presented in this article, often recalled how deeply the singing of the monks, which he heard more than once on such trips, sank into his soul. He also talked about how, thanks to musical abilities that manifested itself at an early age, he often stood next to the singers during church services and sang along with them.

Military service and the beginning of independent life

After graduating high school, and having reached conscription age, Vasily went to serve in the army. By a commission from the Military Commissariat he was sent to the Northern Fleet, where for three years served on a nuclear submarine. Here the young man’s skill in work, developed in him since childhood, came in handy. Conscientiously performing any work entrusted to him, sailor Novikov deservedly earned universal respect.

Having been demobilized in 1970, the future hieromonk Vasily (Novikov) entered the Uzlovsky Railway School and, upon graduation, was assigned to the city of Ershov, where he began working as an assistant driver of a diesel locomotive. There, the Lord soon sent him his bride Valentina.

After the wedding, the young couple settled in the city of Uzlovaya, Tula region, where they had three children - sons Alexander and Mikhail, and daughter Natalya. Soon, as an advanced worker, Vasily was promoted to a leadership position.

    An important turn in life

It would seem, what more could you want? young man? However, this was not the fate that Hieromonk Vasily (Novikov) dreamed of, whose biography by that time fit well into Soviet stereotypes. He considered his true calling to be the priesthood, to which he strove with all his soul, but such a sharp turn in life required considerable determination from him.

Since Vasily was a man burdened with a family, he, of course, could not make such an important decision without the consent of his wife. Having told Valentina about his intentions, he met with a categorical objection from her, the essence of which boiled down mainly to the fact that she was marrying “a driver, not a priest.”

Not daring to impose his opinion on his wife, and only after earnestly praying to God for the admonition of His servant Valentina, Vasily went to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, where, near the shrine with the relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh, he asked the saint for help and intercession in such an important matter. His prayers were heard and, returning home, the pilgrim found his wife softened in heart and fully prepared follow him in a new field.

This story ended with the fact that on one of the days of Great Lent in 1993, the servant of God Vasily (Novikov) was ordained to the rank of deacon, and a week later - to the priesthood. Thus began his many years of service to God, on whose path he entered, having received the blessing of the great saint of the Russian land - St. Sergius of Radonezh.

Ordination and the beginning of spiritual achievement

Father Vasily began his pastoral ministry in the village of Spassky, Tula region, where he was sent after his ordination. Since the 90s were the period that ended long decades of persecution of Russian Orthodoxy, many churches, especially those located in rural areas, were in very poor condition by that time.

This is exactly what the Church of the Exaltation of the Venerable Trees of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord turned out to be in the village of Spassky, of which Hieromonk Vasily (Novikov) was appointed rector. The priest’s fiery sermon, addressed to the hearts of his new fellow villagers, helped him find among them many willing helpers in the restoration of the shrine.

When, thanks to their labors, supported by his own zeal, the temple was brought into proper shape and religious life was revived in it, the diocesan authorities transferred to his care another church, located in a neighboring village, which was almost completely destroyed. This was once famous throughout the area, the temple of the Kazan Icon Mother of God. It was also possible to restore it with the help of God-loving fellow villagers and voluntary sponsors, whom Father Vasily found.

    Taking monastic vows

During the Holy Week of Great Lent in 1997, the Lord called Father Vasily’s wife, Valentina, to His Heavenly Palace, after which the priest finally moved to the village of Spasskoye, Tula Region, where he spent the rest of his life. In April 2006, with the blessing of the diocesan bishop, he accepted the secret one while maintaining his former name.

From that day on, his service began in the “rank of angels,” as from time immemorial they spoke about those who, having rejected the transitory joys of the vain world, devoted themselves entirely to serving God. It is known that, in addition to Father Vasily, 14 more people were tonsured monks at the same time, marking the beginning of the creation of a new monastery.

    Spiritual shepherd of fellow villagers

Remaining, as before, the rector of the village church, Hieromonk Vasily (Novikov) of Tula - as he is usually called - tirelessly took care of the decorum and splendor of church life. It was solely thanks to his diligence that the wall painting, which had fallen into disrepair, was restored, a baptismal and almshouse building was built, their parents were opened, and a choir singing was organized.

Always immersed in parish affairs, Hieromonk Vasily (Novikov) did not forget about performing monastic feats, the main of which at that time was unceasing internal prayer, the vow of which he made at the time of tonsure, as well as regular nightly prayer vigils. Village residents recalled how often the light in Father Vasily’s window did not go out throughout the night.

Having begun to perform such prayers in private, that is, at home, in seclusion from everyone, the priest soon transferred them to the temple, where he gathered everyone. He accompanied the liturgical texts with the reading of the Psalter and akathists. The night vigil was always concluded with a deeply thought-out and brilliantly executed sermon by Hieromonk Vasily (Novikov).

    An ardent supporter of monarchism

According to his political preferences, Father Vasily was a convinced monarchist, who believed that only autocracy could ensure peace and prosperity for Russia. Being a sincere admirer of the innocently murdered sovereign Nicholas II, he perceived his death as an atoning sacrifice brought to the altar of the fatherland.

Having repeatedly visited the village of Taininskoye, where the local priest performed the rite of repentance for the crimes of the Bolsheviks in those years, the priest repeated this ritual many times in his church. This practice contributed greatly to the fame he gained in the 2000s.

An important role in this was played by the fiery sermon of Hieromonk Vasily Novikov (August 2007) about the importance of true faith in human life, and the inadmissibility of its replacement by the worship of worldly and transient values. A video of this speech was widely circulated on the Internet.

At the same time, a film appeared in which such prominent representatives of the spiritual life of Russia of those years as Hieromonk Vasily (Novikov) and Hierodeacon Abel (Semyonov) addressed Russians with pastoral instructions, accompanying their words with prophecies about the future of the country.

Fighter for the purity of faith

The following year, Father Vasily submitted an application to the leadership of the diocese to remove him from the staff and provide him with the opportunity to continue his pastoral activities at his place of residence, which is provided for by one of the articles of the current Church Charter. His request was granted, and since then the sermon of Hieromonk Vasily (Novikov) was heard for everyone who gathered on appointed days near his house in Spassky.

It should be noted that Father Vasily was always distinguished by high principles and never compromised in matters of faith and many other aspects modern life. In particular, he publicly expressed his extreme negative attitude to ecumenism and globalism. In this regard, it is known that Hieromonk Vasily (Novikov), whose fiery sermons sometimes touched on these problems, was more than once attacked by the authorities, who saw signs of extremism in his speeches.

    The death of the righteous

The last pious act of Father Vasily is the erection of a font over a holy spring in the village of Ivankovo, dedicated to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. This building, which was consecrated on November 4, 2010, was built by him with the help of his spiritual children, as well as voluntary donors. The work took a lot of strength from the priest, since at the beginning of the same year he fell ill with a cold, and over the next months he tried to bear the illness on his feet that would not let him go.

Father Vasily did not turn to doctors for help, preferring folk remedies and prayer. However, in November his condition deteriorated so much that he was able to receive unction once again and receive communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ only without rising from his bed. Finally, in the early morning of November 11, 2010, while reading one of the canons, he quietly departed to the Lord.

    Uncanonized saint

On this day, many priests and spiritual children visited the house in which their brother in Christ and spiritual mentor, Hieromonk Vasily (Novikov), offered his last prayer. The cause of the death of this ascetic of piety was, without a doubt, not only in the illness that befell him, but also in the extreme exhaustion of the strength devoted to serving the church.

The burial of Father Vasily took place with a gathering of a huge number of people who came to the village of Spasskoye from all over the country to see off their spiritual mentor and teacher on their last journey. But even after the established church tradition days of remembrance of the deceased, grave of hieromonk Fr. Vasily (Novikov) is regularly visited by his admirers. An unquenchable lamp always flickers on it.

They all believe that one day, among other Russian saints, their spiritual mentor, Hieromonk Vasily (Novikov), will be glorified as a saint. The troparion for him was composed shortly after his death, and the day is not far off when, on the next anniversary of his death, it will sound in all Russian churches.
