Introduction

A psychologist at a school is a staff member, and to work with children it is necessary special education. Although a classical psychologist can apply for a position, school management will often prefer to hire a person with a pedagogical education, especially since modern universities have begun to train specialists in this specialty. A teacher-psychologist at school does several things:

  1. Conducts conversations with children and parents, gives the necessary consultations.
  2. Speaking at parent meetings, talks about the behavior of students.
  3. Takes part in meetings of the methodological association, helps develop learning programs and put them into practice.
  4. He speaks at pedagogical councils, training teachers to work with children and resolve conflict situations.
  5. Plays the role of a link between teacher, student and parents.

Main responsibilities

Often psychologists are involved in working with students or parents not of their own free will, but at the request of the court, guardianship authorities or juvenile affairs inspectorate. They help representatives of the relevant authorities conduct conversations with students, undergo various examinations, assess the degree of development of schoolchildren, etc. The activities of a psychologist affect four main areas:

  1. Educational work. Since in Russia people traditionally devote a minimum of time to psychological education, misunderstandings, bullying and pressure from one side on the other often arise in families and groups. Children absorb all this and often react aggressively to various changes. The teacher’s task is to improve the psychological culture of parents, children and teachers. He advises parents and teachers, talking about how to act correctly in certain situations, how to properly develop a child’s psyche, what achievements there are in this science and what they should pay attention to in order not to “lose” a growing citizen.
  2. Carrying out preventive measures aimed at preserving and strengthening the psychological health of the younger generation. The teacher is responsible for creating harmonious and comfortable conditions for the development of children, for timely detection of deviations in the development of schoolchildren and diagnosing difficult adolescents, for preventing the health of children when moving from class to class or from primary school to middle and high school. Prevention is usually carried out in three stages: in the first, the psychologist communicates with all students, analyzing their emotional and behavioral level, in the second, he identifies children at risk and conducts separate conversations with them, and in the third, he works with students who have expressed problems. Problems include developmental delays (emotional and physical), unstable behavior, and difficulties with learning and communication.
  3. Conducting consultations with teachers and parents. Thanks to consultations, teachers receive the necessary knowledge on how to cope with difficult and stressful situations, how to analyze the development of children and their personal qualities, how to correctly treat the children’s tricks and assess their prospects. It is at such consultations that teachers learn to increase students’ motivation and raise their self-esteem, develop plans for working with the younger generation, and remove stamps placed on children based on first impressions.
  4. Standard also includes consultations. He teaches adults and children to build the right relationships, build relationships with their peers, parents and mentors. Consultations can take place individually or in the form of seminars with a class, stream or groups. Teachers often turn to psychologists if there are children in their class who have problems in the family, if they do not master the school curriculum, if they lack the desire to learn and achieve their goals. Parents who do not like the behavior of a schoolchild and who want to get professional advice from a specialist on how to behave and raise a child correctly, how to reduce excitability, how to get rid of low self-esteem and cope with timidity can also turn to a psychologist.

Attention:The psychologist is obliged to work with both adults and children, explaining to them the reasons for their behavior, the current situation and ways to solve existing problems. He must establish trusting relationships with students, and they will turn to him on issues related to relationships with other students, with the opposite sex, with parents and teachers.

Classes can be held individually or collectively

Additional Responsibilities

Above we have listed the main responsibilities that fall on the shoulders of a school psychologist, but in fact there are much more of them. This specialist should explain to teachers that there are no good or bad children, but there are individuals who need to be helped to express themselves. This specialist should explain to students how to behave correctly in a group and respond to bullying. This specialist should help parents cope with their children at the time of puberty, when a person’s character changes.

In addition, the specialist also diagnoses his patients. He checks how harmoniously and correctly children are developing, using tests, observations, conversations and other methods. Mental health diagnostics are carried out in several ways and in a number of areas:

  1. Does the student have personal problems and deviations?
  2. How well developed is the child's intelligence?
  3. How well developed is the student’s process of self-knowledge and knowledge of the world around him?
  4. Can the child control his emotional state and how well does he adapt to a new team, among peers and teachers.
  5. Does the student have motivation and can he use it correctly?
  6. How well does a young man understand what awaits him in the future, whether he chooses the right profession for himself and whether he has the necessary qualities to master it.

Attention:After a primary or secondary diagnosis has been carried out, the specialist makes a psychological diagnosis. It is a conclusion that describes the characteristics of the student’s development and his personal characteristics.

Work planning

In the main necessarily includes drawing up a work plan, like any teacher. Accordingly, prevention, diagnostics and educational work are carried out according to plan. The employee is obliged:

  1. Create various developmental programs for primary, middle and senior schoolchildren, and monitor their implementation.
  2. Conduct regular diagnostics of the condition and characteristics of schoolchildren, preventing the appearance of deviations in adolescents.
  3. Introduce measures to control the formation of teaching and educational methods aimed at the harmonious development of the individual.
  4. Prevent the emergence of problems in personal development, as well as control the atmosphere in the institution.
  5. Help students choose the right future profession based on personal characteristics and interests. Help students discover their talents and abilities, apply their knowledge and skills.

All these activities are included in the plan and implemented by the employee as he progresses through the educational process. The focus should be on secondary and high school, but work is also needed with primary schoolchildren so that they develop harmoniously and direct their energy in the right direction.

A psychologist helps children join the team and solve problems

Attention:When drawing up a plan, it must include data on individual and group consultations. The psychologist must conduct individual consultations both according to the plan and on a routine basis, sorting out conflict situations.

Please note that when planning, it is necessary to take into account meetings and consultations not only with schoolchildren, but also with parents, the director of the educational institution, teachers and head teachers. And if teachers are often biased towards such meetings, parents are happy to go to consultations, receiving the necessary information on how to properly raise their child. The psychologist teaches them to study the preferences of children, their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. It teaches the child to listen and hear, to understand why he has difficulties with learning, which causes aggression and apathy.

Often a psychologist works not only at school, but also V kindergarten, correcting the behavior of children and preparing them for the transition to a new educational institution. If we talk about school, the specialist helps students in self-knowledge and self-determination, suggests how to cultivate willpower and positive traits, how to properly build relationships with your classmates, with older children, with teachers and adults. Most consultations are carried out on an individual basis: specific problems and situations are analyzed. Group classes are held when it is necessary to convey information to the entire class or stream, as well as when students choose a profession in high school.

Who can become a psychologist

There are mainly two categories of people who apply to become psychologists: those who are really interested in this science and those who want to get at least some kind of education. The first category will certainly become good specialists, but the second category should never be allowed to work with children, because such people can cripple the child for the rest of his life.Training to become a psychologist is carried out in almost all pedagogical and polytechnic universities in Russia: there are no problems with this department in any region of the country. Moreover, if you want to get a really good education, then you should choose specialized universities, and not those in which the faculty is allocated for the sake of recruiting additional students. Often school psychologists gain practice and experience in educational institutions, and then move on to more serious and responsible work, or even create their own psychological assistance centers.

In terms of pay, the profession of a school psychologist is a low-income one. Average salary at preschool educational institution is 10-15 thousand rubles, in schools from 12 to 25 thousand rubles. In megacities, specialists can earn 30-50 thousand rubles.
